Calgary Recs?

I'm going to Calgary next week for a work trip, and I will have some time on my own in the afternoons and evenings.  I've never been there, so any suggestions for things to do? Restaurant suggestions?  I'm staying downtown and won't have a car. Thanks!

Ooops, just saw the post below, so sorry for the repeat.  But any other suggestions that would be specific to downtown would be great!

The Glenbow museum is downtown, so is the Calgary tower, and Vertigo Mystery Theatre.  There's a mall on 7th Ave, but it's currently under construction, so it's a bit of a PITA.  If you're interested in shopping you can take the C-Train right to Chinook mall, which is a pretty good mall.  As for restaurants, there are quite a few along Stephen Avenue with patios outside.  The James Joyce Irish Pub is really neat and has pretty good food.

  • Market Mall in the North is also a really good mall, I'm pretty sure it's close to the C Train as well.  Next week is July 1st, so there will probably be some Canada Day celebrations downtown, Prince's Island Park usually has something all day with fireworks at the end and is at the edge of the core.  I wouldn't go there any other evening after 6 p.m. by myself though - Canada Day should be safe enough if there are crowds, but normally no, the paths there are lovely for walking during the day when there are lots of people using them.

Oh, and just across the river from downtown is Kensington, they have a lot of neat little shops, restaurants and cafes there.

  • Just ate at Murietta's on 1 St between 8th and 9th Ave, it's on the second level, I had forgotten about it but it's excellent.
