Anyone ever had serious neck pain?

Hubby has been having some really bad neck pain for the past few days.  It started a few weeks ago but got better then this past Sunday started back up again.  He went to the dr on Tuesday am and they took xrays & gave him muscle relaxers and anti inflammatory meds.  Yesterday he was feeling a ton better.  He was able to move his head (which he couldn't do since Monday) but was still taking it easy.  We have been icing it, doing heat, etc. and we figured that the meds were finally working yesterday.  Today he woke up and said it was feeling stiff again, and now he is to the point where it hurts to move his arms.  He has a call into the dr's office but I wasn't sure if anyone else had anything like this that could offer some insight.  I told him if the dr can't do something today we should go to the hospital but of course he doesn't think its that bad.  I'm concerned now b/c (1) he never complains about pain unless its realllllly bad, (2) he can't move his neck at all in any direction, and (3) it hurts to move his arms.  Help anyone?  Thanks.

Re: Anyone ever had serious neck pain?

  • Keep calling his doctor until they give him an appointment.  And if they won't help him ask for an immedete referral to a specalist.  My H somehow injured his neck years ago & kept ignoring the pain for months & months until he had numbness & weakness in his arms & legs & started having problems going to the bathroom.  His doctors thought he had MS, Parkinsons, or some other bad disease.  Turns out the disks in his neck were so bad that his doctor canceled a trip to do an emergency spinal fusion.  DH has permanent damage to his spinal cord as well as pain and a limp that will never go away.  He's almost 40 now and probably feels 20 years older.  It sucks!

So yeah, I'd drag his butt to the hospital tonight if he doesn't see his doctor today.  Actually the quickest way to see a specalist is probably a trip to the ER.  They'll either see him right away or send him to a clinic w/in a few days.

  • Yes. I have a pinched nerve in my neck which will flare up and make it difficult for me to turn my head to the right or tilt it backwards. It is extremely painful at times.

This!  Thank you both very much for the advice and info.  He made a half serious comment about having MS as a possibility.  I told him to call the drs back now and find out what's going on.  He is a chef and is also really active so I'm afraid he prob has something going on that an xray can't show.

This also sounds very plausible to me b/c he says his pain is centralized on one side of his neck.  He is able to turn his head a little more one direction than the other.  I don't know what to do.  He juts called the dr back and they said it might not be until 3 or 4 today before the actual dr calls him.  I don't want this to turn into let's hurry up and wait b/c to me its pretty serious at this point.  He can't do anything but sit and he's in pain.

  • If he's "joking" about serious problems then he needs to be very proactive & push for help.  If he ends up in enough pain that he can't go to work then he probably sould go to the emergency room.  BTW, I had carpel tunnel syndrome about 8 years ago.  I called my doctor and as soon as I mentioned arm pain they wanted me to come in ASAP.  Turns out they don't mess around when you have any symptoms that could indicate a heart attack!  There is probably zero possibility that your H is having a heart attack or stroke but they should be a little more on the ball if he's telling them all of his symptoms.  I'd be finding a new doctor if he is telling them all his symptoms & they can't even have somone call him back.

Good luck.  Husbands can be thick headed sometimes.

  • Not sure what type of doctor he has seen. I recommend that he sees a neurologist (if you don't need a PCP referral, then schedule the appt yourself). My dad is a neurologist and sees a lot of patients with neck pain. Most of the time, the patient has a tension headache, which stems from muscle tightness/spasms. Taking over the counter meds won't help, you need to massage and stretch the muscles. Sometimes my dad gives an injection to numb and relax the muscles. If it's a persistent problem, then he might send them to a pain specialist. (Tension headaches are nothing to worry about, I get them sometimes and my husband just has to massage my shoulders and back). If the above solution doesn't help relieve the pain, then my dad sends for MRI/CT scan to see if there are any issues with the spine/disks/etc. If there are any findings, those are treated accordingly. I would be careful about the MS diagnosis. Always get a second opinion with such an impactful diagnosis. Some doctors will automatically diagnose patients with MS without doing the proper protocols/procedures and tests. They might do this to get the person into a study for MS drugs and then show positive results from the meds (since the person never had MS in the first place).
  • He is going back to the dr today.  The actual dr wants to see him today (H saw the nurse practioner on Tues) and we'll see what he says.  If the dr doesn't order the MRI today, I'm just going to take him to the ER b/c this to me is pretty serious at this point.  He didn't sleep at all last night and is still in a tremendous amount of pain.  I feel so helpless b/c I can't do much and it hurts me watching him hurt.  I will keep everyone posted on the status later once we figure out what the game plan is.  Please keep him in your thoughts & prayers if you wouldn't mind.  I am hoping this is something easily fixed, but it still worries me.  TY!
