Female Execs make more than Male Counterparts

You can read the study and the story, but here are a few of my theories on why they make more:

  1. There are fewer female executives, so if a female makes it to that level, she's pretty kickass, whereas a male at that level is just regular kickass.
  2. Corporate America likes having a diverse image and will thus pay women more because they contribute to that image.
  3. Girls rule; boys drool.

Anyway, the actual question that is posed is, 'why do female executives (past child-bearing age) leave the workforce earlier?'  My theory: they're not greedy bastards and would rather enjoy retirement (grandkids, vacations, etc.) than work until they're 90. But, just my theories. Smile

Re: Female Execs make more than Male Counterparts

  • Funny, I saw this on our elevator tv when I got lunch.  All of my colleagues in the elevator cried in unison, "bullsh!t!"  It is hard to believe the facts given history.

I like #3 as the reason.

Hahahahhahaa, that's where I saw it, too!  It's sad. Any news I don't get on here, I get from my elevator.

  • Well, that's not going to help the persecution complex some women have, but yay for women execs! I'm pretty sure when you compare part-time workers women get paid more than men too. So we're taking over the bottom and the top and working our way to the middle Wink

  • I think one are that should be looked at is $ by industry, the industries that have a good mix could be higher paying where stuff like manufacturing is male dominated but lower wage.

    Definitely not #3

Embarrassed  Glad to know I'm not the only one who gets news from the elevator!

Haven't looked at the study yet, but I would also surmise that female execs, if married, are more likely to have working spouses. I would guess male execs are more likely to have wives who stay at home. So the 2 income family might not need to be earning as long because they were earning more. Plus, the male exec has somebody to take care of crap at home, so he doesn't burn out as quickly. Just a gut-level guess with no data to support it.

Hey, it's great multitasking!  What else are we gonna do heading up 87523 stories?  I think it was against compliance at the investment bank to talk shop in the elevator.

  • This sounds interesting.  I don't have the energy to read it now, but I'm bookmarking it for later.  Thanks for posting!

Very true! I used to loathe having to stop at every farkin floor before I got off.  Those tvs at least keep me entertained.

  • Maybe due to juggling work and kids in the earlier years, once they hit the average executive age, they are more efficient and productive and therefore are worth more to the company?  Just a guess.

I think the difference in industries that promote women vs. those that don't may play a factor, too.

We have double-decker elevators, so worst-case scenario they stop every other floor... except our lower level elevators are closed for construction now, so it should be interesting.  So far no headaches, though.

ESF, I'm really curious about your take on this as it's your field. :)
