Birthing Centers?

The other night I was watching a Baby Story where they were using a Birthing Center. I mentioned to DH that when our time comes I really like the idea of as much of a 'natural birth' as possible. He went into a tizzy about how he doesn't feel that it's safe enough and yadda yadda yadda. We came to an agreement that when the time comes we can look into a birthing center attached to a hospital. He refuses to consider any where I'd have to be moved from one building to another if a complication arose, even if it was just a block over.

I realize that I'm looking WAY too far into the future, but has anybody heard of or had any luck with a Birthing Center inside/attached to a hospital?

TIA! If I weren't at work, I'd post a pic of a yummy treat!

Re: Birthing Centers?

  • One of my friends is due in December and is planning on using a birthing center in Denton. I think it is about 3 miles from a hospital. She has used them before and likes this place a lot. Here's a link:

  • I am a L&D RN and must say that IF you use a birthing center.... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have excellent prenatal education! If a complication did arise while you were in labor...you AND your husband need to understand and be well informed of what could happen and the risks involved. If an emergency occurred things would move very quickly and not much time would be spent thorough teaching. You could also deliver with a midwife in a hospital if you wanted to, but I would be careful which one you would choose because some of them lose their holistic approach once practicing in a hospital.

And, yes there is a birthing center about 3 miles from Denton Presbyterian Hospital (or TX Health Denton) that has a NICU as well. There is also a birthing center in the HEB area that is next to a hospital.

This can be a safe and rewarding experience for you at this birthing center but prenatal education is soooo important. I can't stress that enough.

P.S. Don't skip the postpartum chapters in the What to Expect While You're Expecting book.

Good Luck! I hope everything goes well for you!
