DIY Cake Stands - Paint Question

I know I should probably ask this on the DIY board but...

It's looking like I'm going to make a few of these stands (http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/05/diy-project-kates-recycled-cakestands.html) for a friends' wedding dessert display next weekend because they've come up a little short. If they end up not needing them, I still want to make a couple for me. Smile

If I can't find good looking plates and/or vases, what kind of paint do you think would work well? I saw on another tutorial that they just used spray paint... but matte? glossy? I'm not sure.

What are her wedding colors? I would think spray paint, even a metallic gold? I would think the matte or glossy would depend on what colors you would use.... Cute project!

Her colors are muted greens and purples with gold accents. I didn't even think of doing the stands gold. That could look nice! I was just thinking of matching them to her flowers (my mom's doing them so we'll have them all over her house on Tuesday) or doing white so they could be a decoration in my kitchen after (selfish, huh?).

I wouldn't use spray paint. Take your pieces to one of those DIY pottery places and ask if they'll let you paint, glaze, and fire them there.

Can you fire any kind of glass?

Probably not, but maybe call and see what they say? Maybe they'll have a recommendation on what to look for. There always seems to be ceremaic plates at my local Goodwills, maybe you'll have luck.

I don't think you can fire any kind of glass....but I could be wrong...it happens. I think they would look nice metallic gold....but I would make the plate and the stand metallic gold, that way from the side the stand looks like an actual whole stand and the attention is on the cake or the flowers or whatever you are putting on top of the cake stands.... But that's just me. Big Smile

I'm with Munkii- I'd be hesitant about using spray paint. First of all, it might just flake off of the glass, secondly you probably wouldn't be able to wash it after you use it, and lastly I'm not sure about it being food safe or not. Whatever you use, you want it to be food safe. But there are special paints made specifically for glass and ceramics. I've seen them before at Michael's but since their website stinks here is a link to something at *** Blick that looks like it might work. Pebeo makes a bunch of different types of paint, usually available at art stores.

Ooh! I didn't even think about food safety or washing! What would I do without you? I know at least one of the desserts is not going to be packaged in any way... so I should look into food safe paints (didn't even know they existed).
