More car registration questions!
Hi! We just moved to Somerville (writing this from my living room, which contains nothing but two folding chairs, suitcases, my laptop, and of course our wireless router providing the internet!) and I have one car.
Our CA registration would have expired literally three days ago, so to avoid being halfway across the country in an un-registered car, I renewed in CA. Do I now have to re-register in MA immediately and lose my $250, or can I keep my CA plates while we get settled? If yes, for how long? I know I could read the state webpage and get the official answer (which I am sure is I have 10 days to register), but I was hoping some of you could offer voices of experience on how critical this is.

We registered ours as soon as we moved back here, so I don't know what the official answer is. I think you're going to have to read the website, unfortunately. I suspect you don't have much time and you'll be out the $250, sorry!
Where in California did you move from, by the way? I grew up here but then lived in the Bay Area for six years before coming back. And I, too, remember moving into our house and only having a folding table and two chairs to our names for a few days. We didn't even have Internet set up yet so we stole random WiFi for a few hours
You need to switch plates and DL within 30 days.It's not like they are going to know, but if you get into a car accident or anything and the cop finds out, he will fine you.
I don't know what the parking rules are like in Somerville, but you might need to be registered there to get a parking sticker. That's the only thing I can think of that might force you to switch sooner than later.

Thanks for the welcome! This is definitely a permanent move, so unfortunately we don't have a legit claim to any address in Cali anymore. We have a garage here, and I think not needing the street permit is why it's so tempting to wait on the car registration. We have some friends who kept their Hawaii plates and driver's licenses for over a year after moving here, but I don't know what their insurance situation was like (Funny story - they finally got MA plates after finding a bunch of drunk college students trying to remove their Hawaii plates as a souvenir!)
Also - We did in fact move from the Bay Area! We'd been in Berkeley since 2002 for grad school, and then I had a job working in Hayward for two years after that.
