Oil Spill Volunteering

I've been mostly lurking around here lately, but thought I'd give y'all an update on oil spill stuff.  I'm super excited to finally be able to help with oiled wildlife starting Monday and Tuesday.  I'll be going down there every other week on my off days to help at the wildlife facility in Theodore, Alabama.  I'm really gonna have to cut back on spending since I have to pay for gas and hotel in order to do this, but I really feel in my heart that I have to help.  I'm excited to get this experience and I hope it leads to helping IBRRC and Tri-State in future disasters.  (Ok, that sounds bad when I type it out, I hope you guys know what I mean...I don't wish any of this on anyone or anything, but unfortunately it will happen again somewhere else).

My Center is preparing/gearing up to receive birds that will need prolonged care.  We weren't really prepared to take some Pelicans when they offered a few weeks ago, but with the help and info from the Zoo we'll be able to take Pelicans.

Hope everyone is having/had a great weekend. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Re: Oil Spill Volunteering

  • That is great you are going to help.  Update us after you get back.

I didn't think it sounded bad when you said you wanted to help.  You are right these things do happen and it's great people are ready to help.

  • Unfortunately, disasters do happen.  Some are preventable and some aren't, but it's best to be prepared.  The poor animals covered in oil really break my heart.  More power to ya for going down there and volunteering.
  • We are all very proud of you! Please keep yourself safe! :-)
