Le skunk

Sorry I didnt see all the skunk questions until today. I was taking photos for someone till late last night and haven't been on.

Ok heres a video of the skunk and my dog:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_ojgkC0y2I

The skunk is descented, so he cannot spray. He does, however, pretend he can spray. He will run up to you and stomp his feet, then stick his tail up like he is spraying!!

The skunk uses a litter box like a cat, he has REALLY long nails and he likes to dig in the carpet. That's a huge problem that we have with him.

He has to eat vegetables, fruits, etc. In the morning my sister cooks him eggs with cheese (he wont eat unless the cheese is in it!). At night she feeds him peas and carrots mixed with egg and cheese again. If he doesn't get a balanced diet, his white hair starts to turn a yellowish color.

It's a lot of work having a skunk lol

Re: Le skunk

  • Awww Pepe is beautiful!!  I love his markings!

My uncle used to have a pet skunk- when he lived in Manhattan (I find that funny in itself!) back in the 70's.  He was descented also and apparently very smart. He loved pizza and would know when my uncle was ordering one because he had memorized the tones of the pizza place's phone number!

  • oh my gosh that is so funny!!

  • ya they r fun to have but a lot of work. Also, his teeth are SHARP and when they are little they go through a teething stage. I was terrified of him because he would always bite me!!

  • Wow! That is crazy! Where did you get him? I don't think I ever knew you could have a skunk for a pet... can you clip his nails like you clip a cat or dog's claws?

Is he affectionate? Can he be seen by a regular vet?

    I find this rather fascinating...

  • We got him at a pet store, it's actually my sisters skunk legally, but I feel like he's mine also! She had to get a permit for him and everything since he is a wild animal. He was about 300.00

You cant really cut his nails, they have to be that long. They are seriously about 1/2 inch long! He can be seen by a regular vet, and I believe his vaccinations are the same as a cats. He also can be neutered by the vet. He is a scavenger, so we have to have a very heavy garbage can with a lid, and when he was little we had to tie the cabinets shut so he wouldn't get in them!

  • Love it!

So can he be picked up/pet like a cat?  Or do you not pet skunks?

When you first brought him home, how did he interact with your other animal?  Was it fine from day one?

  • Love the video!  This is all so interesting!  Does the skunk like to be petted?  What kind of permit did it require?  How did you know it was a wild animal that needed a permit?

  • Yeah you can pick the skunk up and pet him, he also likes toys. He is just like a cat and a dog mixed together. We also took him to the beach and he got into the ocean! :)

The dog and the skunk got along since day one, only because they were both babies when we got them. I think it would be hard to get a dog used to a skunk though if it had never been used to cats or other wild animals.

I am not sure exactly what the permit is called but its some type of permit for owning a wild animal. My sister bought the skunk but could not pick it up until she had proof of a permit. She had to take a test on what to do if your wild animal gets out of your house, who you have to contact if its lost, etc. You also have to know all this information about skunks and get like an 80% on the test or something like that. It was really crazy!

I think our dog is like a cat and a dog mixed together!  I love that about him - he does tricks like a dog and plays like a dog, but he grooms himself like a cat and often hangs out alone like a cat.  I wish he liked to cuddle more, but I guess that's my problem. :)

What a cool pet to have though!
