puppy fever on hold...LONG AND GROSS

sooo we have been watching our friends 3 dogs for the weekend.  we've watched them before and i love them all, boxer, chocolate lab and a chihuahua (sorry, don't know how to spell that one).  but we haven't watched them since we had josie.

WELL, night 1, i woke up at 1am b/c the little chihuahua had pooped IN OUR BED.  YUCK.  if she doesn't sleep with you, she cries her little head off and i thought we would be safe having her sleep in our bed.  not so much.  clean that up and go back to sleep.  2:30am, josie wakes up for about 10 minutes, i go back to sleep.  5am i wake up to doggie noises....and find 4 spots of dog poop in the house and one of the dogs has thrown up.  i clean it all up, shower and back to bed at 6:30ish.  josie is up at 7:30, i'm so tired.  realize at 8am, i didn't see the dog had also had diareah in my sneakers in the closet and the little one had peed under our bed.  OH EM GEE.  thank god TJ takes over cleaning while i feed josie.

night 2 (last night) i'm so tired, i go to bed at 11pm.  woke up at 5am to the chihuahua crying (TJ put her in her cage at 3am when he came to bed)  she had puked and pooped so much her little cage was literally overflowing with yuckiness.  now josie is crying too because the dog is yelping so loud.  i put the cage and dog (separately) outside and get tj up.  i take care of josie, then go and give the dog a bath and clean the cage while TJ is cleaning up the mess still inside.

i feel so bad, it is totally our fault the little dog got so sick.  we are supposed to feed them separately since the little one eats the big dogs food, and i just let TJ handle that b/c i was busy with the baby.  well, even though I TOLD him to feed them separately, he thought he was watching them well enough while they were eating.  apparently not since she over ate both nights and was so sick from it.

i felt so bad for her, i stayed up since 5 and have been cuddling with her all morning, she's asleep in my lap now.

BUT needless to say, i'm exhausted and having dogs is a lot of work i have forgotten, and i think we are putting puppy plans on hold for awhile after this weekend!!

Re: puppy fever on hold...LONG AND GROSS

  • Ooo, wow! That's quite a bit in a short amount of time! Ew! I think your friends should tip you well somehow, lol.

Yes, while having dogs is a lot of work, also think of this: You were watching your friend's dogs, and you were following their routine they set in them. If you had your own dog, you would have trained and set a routine, so that after the initial "where am I and what do you want?" from the dog for a few days, everything would be fine. The pup would be one that learns your life, not you learning the dogs' life.

Just wanted to put that out there, not forcing you into a pup if you don't want one at the moment, it just stuck in my mind when I read :) 3 dogs seems like a lot, period. When BIL's dog comes over, between him and Daisy I go crazy with just those 2!

  • Thank you for sharing this story...this was the cure I need.  I wanted a dog really bad lately...no so much anymore.

I am so sorry you have had to deal with this!

  • Wow.  What a weekend!  I don't blame you for holding off on the dog for a little while.  However, I do think one would be way more manageable than three.  Three is a lot.

I'm sorry you had a rough weekend, but exactly what Nicole said. We have three dogs and they all have set routines and are overall pretty good dogs. Now they do have accidents every now and then, but for the most part they are pretty low key. The first week with a new dog (a little longer with a puppy) will always be a transition and may be a little tough, but it's not too bad.

  • Nettie had a stomach bug last week while I was on the road and I thought that was bad BUT this takes the cake. OMG!! LOL Umm... I hope your friends bring you something REALLY nice!

  • Wowza!!! You are a trooper...I would not have handled that well at all!!!! Hope you get caught up on sleep soon!!

Same here....I've had puppy fever ever since Kara & Nami both got their Isabelles...but we want a baby first before a puppy. We figured it might be a lot of work to have a baby and puppy at the same time.

Gosh, aren't you "pooped" out from all this doggy matter? LOL...I'm so sorry, and poor little taco bell dog.

  • haha, thanks guys!  they did bring us back a onesie for josie, that was sweet!  :)

i love dogs to death and i still cry sometimes thinking of my zoe bug who i lost a year and a half ago.  i know i want my kids to grow up with dogs...i think i was just spoiled because zoe was soooo easy and now even more spoiled not having to care for any dogs.

i know we will have great dogs in the future, just NOT NOW thats for sure.  i think we'll wait for after kid #2 and maybe even a little more after that.  and i also think i learned that i'm a big dog kinda girl.  :)
