Pill + Condom -or- Pill alone?

I've been on the Pill for years but I still prefer to "double up" on protection by using a condom everytime. Am I paranoid? (DH thinks so). What do you do?

Re: Pill + Condom -or- Pill alone?

  • I take my BC on time everyday without missing a beat, therefore I TRUST my BCP.
  • I agree with PP..when I took the Pill, I took it correctly and I trusted it...We did use the pull out method just to make my mind a little more at ease about it but I trusted it otherwise.

  • I trust the pill. I've used it consistently and correctly for almost 14 years now, and not so much as a pregnancy scare.
  • Totally paranoid. I was on BCP for 15yrs and never had a problem. If your that paranoid why not check into getting an IUD then, no worries.

  • I think you are being paranoid. I used the pills (correctly) for 17 years.

Pregnancies that occur while on BCP are pretty much operator error.

    Hope is not a strategy.
  • I agree. I've taken the pill for 3 years and mostly at the same time every day. On the weekends, I'm sometimes a little lax with them, but I've never had a scare. Of course, I'm sure it differs for other people - I know people who took their pill at different times each day & had two pregnancies that way. I'm sure if you take it like you're supposed to, you're fine.
  • at first we doubled up.  now we don't.  If i'm late/miss a pill, we double up for a week.  I've known several people who got pregnant on BCP though.  I don't know about how well they

  • We use both but we are paranoid.

    We use both because

    1) we are paranoid

    2) i tend to take the pill at varying times of the night on occasion (i take it before bed, but that can vary by a few hours on weekends vs weekdays)

    3) makes for less mess

  • I would say a little paranoid... I was on bcp for about fiver years and took them the same time everyday and never once had a problem with a prgnancy scare... condoms kind of ruin it for me. I just got off bcp and it sucks because I hate them so much! I would say as long as your conistent with the time you take them then your fine but if your not always on time then i would just stop taking the pills if you are only using them for contraception...
  • We use both, too, though DH would like to stop.  We just cannot have a baby right now and it is just something that we can't have an oops on.  I know that they are very effective, but I would just rather be sure right now.  I am sure we will stop using them at some point.
  • If you take it correctly, it's fine by itself.  If you forget to take them, then use a condom.

  • If you're taking your pill correctly (same time every single day), you're pretty well protected.

But if it makes you feel better to double up, go for it.  It doesn't hurt anything.

  • You're being paranoid. Take the pill correctly and just have him pull out if it will make you feel better about it. You'll be fine.

This. I also have a health condition that does not mix well with pregnancy, and I absolutely can not get pregnant with the medication that I have to take for it - it can cause serious birth defects.

  • I'm on Depo now but when DH and I first started sleeping together I was on BCP and we doubled up mostly b/c we were both completely paranoid.  When we moved in together around 2 years later we trusted my BCP and have since I switched to the shot.

  • We doubled up until I went off BCP due to a seriously decreased libido.  Now it's condoms only.  I don't see any harm in doubling up.  If it puts your mind at ease, it's more likely to help with the sex because you'll be more relaxed.
  • you are paranoid. i agree with the other ladies who said if you take it when you are suppose to, you will have no problems. I never took my pill at the same time every day, but i did take it every day and still never been pregnant. For me the purpose of the pill was so we did not have to use condoms anymore.
  • I don't think you are being paranoid, you are being cautious. My gf took the pill everyday at the same time and she got pregnant. Why take the risk?
