Hey!

Hey all! My name is Anna and I just moved to the area from North Carolina and I wanted to say hello! I hope you all are doing well :)

Any tips for living in the Miami area?

Re: Hey!

  • Hello & Welcome!

Sorry, I don't have any tips b/c I live in Philadelphia.

  • Hi there and welcome to Miami! Biggest Tip: Have patience when driving...every road in Miami is congested!!!!! What area are you living in Miami? Good Luck!
When life hands you a bunch of lemons, make lemonade-call me over and I'll bring the tequila and salt!
  • Hello and Welcome. Miami is a great city to live in. I am sure you will love it. It is definetly very different than North Carolina.

Like Julissa said traffic is the number one problem in Miami. Well that and the terrible drivers that live here. So be very careful when driving and always factor in a little extra time when going somewhere because you will undoubtely run into some traffic.

I took a look at your blog and it seems you live near UM. That is a great area. I don't know if you have been to South Miami yet but it should be on your to do list. You can stroll down the streets and eat at one of the many great restaurants in that area. While there you can stop at Splitsville for some bowling or maybe a movie. Both can be found at Sunset Place.

ETA: One more thing make sure you stop by Miami's Best Pizza. It is right across from UM. They have yummy cheap pizza and the best ceaser salad on earth.

  • Welcome to Miami! As I'm sure you've figured out, this is a vibrant, fast-paced city and there is always tons to do. As pp mentioned, the traffic can be unbearable at times. I don't know if you're going to be commuting anywhere, but definitely factor in lots of travel time for anywhere you go. And drivers are aggressive, here. There is great shopping and tons of wonderful restaurants in the South Miami and Coral Gables areas. If you have any specific questions, I can give you suggestions on where to eat, shop, recreational activities, etc..

  • Hi!  Welcome to the board and welcome to Miami!  I live a little bit more north in Boca Raton, but visit Miami often enough.  There is so much to do and it's a great city.  PPs have given a lot of great recommendations, but if you ever want to know anything in particular just ask!

  • Thanks everyone! So far it's been great:) I can tell what you all mean with the traffic though! I told DH he has turned into a Miami driver already. haha, but I guess you kinda gotta be. I also heard people were rude down here, but I have not found that to be true at all- everyone so far has been really nice.

We do live Coral Gables- we actually live on UM's campus because I work for the University. They have provided housing, etc- so it's been nice thus far.

DH and I were looking for good bars around here that were not too over priced- any suggestions?

Thanks so far for all the help! You all seem really nice :)

  • Hi, I don't live in Miami so I don't have any tips (I'm in Palm Beach), but I just wanted to say welcome to the board.

Since you're right by UM, I definitely suggest you try Smoke't - it's an upscale bbq restaurant with a great bar and if you go during happy hour the prices are great. They have a very extensive beer menu, which I love. MH is the souz-chef there, so I might be a little biased. :) Also around UM is Titanic - which is super close to UM - Irish Times, Sunset Tavern and Bougainvillea's are all cheap hangouts around Sunset Place - not far at all from UM. Just as an fyi - you are going to be dealing with a lot of drunk college kids - as long as you don't mind that, the drinks are super inexpensive.

Also, there are tons of bars in the Grove - My friends and I usually end up at Tavern or Barracudas. We used to go to Moe's a lot, but there is a younger crowd there now and if we really want to get trashed, we usually just end up playing beer pong or flip cup at one of our houses.

I prefer to drink at restaurants that have nice bars - like Town Kitchen and Bar in Sunset Place, the Blue Martini in Mary Brickell Village or Ra Sushi which is also in Sunset Place.

  • Welcome to the board and to Miami!

You'll enjoy living in the Gables, it's a great area with lots to do.  Everyone else gave great advice.  I would have replied earlier, but I'm actually in NC right now.  Where did you move from?

  • WOW! thanks Elistar! :) that really helps out a lot! i know who to go to for advice around here now ;)

Ahorton- I moved from Raleigh, where are you visiting? NC is beautiful, but I believe it's actually hotter there now than it is here!

  • We were up in Lake Lure for the week, just south of Asheville.  It was unbelievably hot up there!  I think the news said it was averaging about 10 degrees higher than normal.  But I still love it up there, so beautiful.
