Possible moving...please help!

So I am looking for jobs around the Austin area, one in particular is at DELL. I was wondering if anyone on here works for DELL and how you like it?  Every job has it flaws, but from the website it sounds like a good company to work for.  Also how is Round Rock?  I live in a town of about 20,000 people so I can imagine that RR is going to big a huge change, but it sounds like a nice town to live in.

We would rent first till we knew the area better, but is there a better area in Round Rock to live and are there apartments or houses that are reasonable priced to rent. We probably couldn't afford more than $500-600 a month and it is just the DH and I and a dog. Thanks for all the help.

  • Hey there!

Well, how you like working there highly depends on what you are doing there, we've found. What type of position is it?

I do program management there, and I really enjoy working there.  It sounds like you would like either Round Rock or Pflugerville to start with - you should be able to find an apartment in that price range there - check out rent.com for a better idea on that one.

    Good luck!

  • ditto OrangeFelt. People seem to love or hate Dell. i worked there for about 9 months straight out of college and hated my job, but the company itself was not the problem. I didn't like my particular job and wasn't too fond of the team I was working with. But there are plenty of people who love Dell (likewise you'll find plenty of people who don't). The overall culture and benefits, etc are good IMO though. I'd definitely consider going back to work for them despite not liking my first job there.

good luck with your job & apt hunt!

  • The job I was looking at was a technical sales representative.  I do not have a bachelors yet and that was one of the first jobs I saw that didn't require it.

  • I also work at Dell as a eng. project mgr, but i'm at the Parmer campus instead of the RR campus.  I like my job and my team - but as PPs have mentioned, Dell is a huge company, so it depends which group and org you are going into.

As far as tech sales goes, I'm not that familiar with that group, but I do know a lot of people who have come out of that space into different orgs, so it is a good springboard if you dont have a degree and need work experience.

  • Oh, I will also say that Dell in general has a pretty performance driven work culture. . . so at least in the roles I've been in, we're held accountable for our commitments and execution and it is reflected in our pay, bonuses, and promos.  I like this type of environment, but I've had several coworkers over the years leave specifically b/c of the culture.
