Anyone Here have and inground pool?

or had one at when you were living at home?

Dh and i have been looking into pools since the end of last summer.

I am looking to find out what the upkeep is vs. the upkeep on an above ground? Is there a huge difference.

When I lived at home we had a above ground pool for years and the upkeep wasn't that bad.

Re: Anyone Here have and inground pool?

  • we have an above ground pool. dh does all the chemicals himself and has to treat it a few times a week to keep it balanced.

how many months a year would you be able to use it up there? we're in hot A alabama and can only use ours from the very end of May-August. We're considering taking ours down in the next couple of years to free up yard space since it's unusable for most of the year.

i would research how much return you'd get on adding something like that in. It may be a better idea to keep your yard rather than spend to have a pool put in.

but if it's something you really want and aren't concerned w/ resale, then go for it :)

  • Lauren I see exactly your point. I think other than resale value the pool will take up yard space. I don't mind b/c it will be less to maintain but at the same time if I ever sell my house I think someone with a young  family would probably feel there isn't much yard space, At least if it's an above ground I can't take it down. That is what we did at my mom's house.

ideally i think an above ground is a better fit for us, now to just convince dh. He is set on an inground, I believe the return can be at least 15k and up on an inground pool, of course depending on your yard space.

We had an above ground pool growing up, we lived in that thing during the summers!  If you can afford it, I personally would go for the in-ground pool.  DH and I have discussed getting an inground pool in the distant future, whenever we can afford it.  For us, it wont matter about return b/c we may stay here forever (around here you dont get a return on your pool investment if you go to sell your home).

We used ours from april/may to at least sept, sometimes into october.  LOL!!  Lauren makes a good point, think about how long you will be able to use it in a year.  Also, if you dont have a fence, depending on your local laws you may have to build one whether it's above ground or not.

  • We would use the pool from memorial day to end of sept. which is okay. If we should decide on getting it it as long as our yard is fenced in we shouldn't have a problem.

I already know that we may have to cut down a tree or two b/c of the roots. Which is a downfall.

  • My parents have an in ground pool....they're a little unconventional in their upkeep, LOL.  They buy the huge jugs of chlorine and "shock" the pool when it gets cloudy and the next day it's ok to go in.  They used to mess with testing the water and all the other chemicals but found this to work best for them.  So, it's not very expensive.  They also have a vacuum that is self-propelled.
