XP: What color curtains?

It's been awhile since we had a D&R post!!

http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/38866586.aspx

Right now we just have the existing white sheers that came with the place. I wanted to do bamboo blinds, but because of our freakishly large and abnormal window widths, it would cost a small fortune. imageimage

Do you want already made or DIY?

  • Either.

  • I think I would either stick with white, as its neutral but still pops against the darker walls rather than doing something to match your furniture, or get a pattern that brings in the gold/yellow tones along with some neutrals.  I'm thinking something like these... (although I know they are crazy expensive)

    http://www.potterybarn.com/products/cole-stripe-silk-drape/?pkey=csilk-drapes-shades in the latte color.

  • I do like how white pops against the dark walls and matches the white trim, however a. I want a chance to room darken if I want, and b. does white look okay against the beige couch?

Even though I have a mocha loveseat and recliner I'm trying to downplay the brown and do more gray/black cool tones. Eventually all of the accent furniture will be black.

  • I think since your room has a lot of neutrals, you can really go bold with the curtains. I like the idea of using a pattern and/or picking up more of the gold/yellow from your accent pillows? I like the warmth the yellow adds to the room.

Or you might even be able to get away with a chocolate brown, which would work with the family of browns you are using, and help to give the windows a little more visual weight, and help draw the eye up.

  • Keep the white sheers but add a set of drapes in the gold/yellow color.  You can pull them back and keep both colors or close them to control the amount of light in the room.

  • I know nothing about curtains or homes, but just wanted to make sure you don't think I'm a lurky loo!
  • Ha, thanks sara.

Can you tell I'm skittish about doing something halfway bold? I do think about the yellow, but I'd want to match it up to the exact color of the pillows, and even then I'm scared it will be too in your face. The black/white pattern idea mentioned to me on D&R intrigues me (I already know which fabric I could buy if I wanted to DIY), but I'm scared it will too much print. I'm insane.

  • I think yellow would be beautiful and would really pop!  If you line them (for DIY) it would really help to keep the light out.  That being said, I really like the white for summer.  Nice and airy.
  • For my redecorating stuff, I always make quick digital mockups (based on photos of the room) to get the idea of how my room will look. I am a nerdy graphic designer, so that is what i do in my spare time. If you ever want me to try to mock up something, let me know!

  • megs, a quick mock up would be good -- maybe the yellow first?  Damask, while I am still drawn to it, would be overkill considering my damask DR rug -- LR opens into DR, which is kind of why I brought in the yellow/black/grey palette into the LR.

darby, I think I do like the white,  just not the sheers I have. I'm pretty sure my neighbors can watch TV with me from outside.

  • oh megs, you're good! If you have time to goof off, can you do it to the big window too? And can I see it in this too??

  • I like Meg's mock up. My sister had dark drapes that she can pull shut with sheer whites ones under it. Would something like that help the trim pop but allow you to still have privacy when you want?

  • megs, you rock!

Based on these, I'm learning toward the yellow curtains. I will probably keep the sheers (but not on double rods). So now I must go curtain shopping with my pillow. :)

    Thanks, everyone!

    This.

Otherwise you can sew the white on top of the drapes.
