What kind of camera do you have?  I'm really wanting to get into amateur photography as a hobby.  My camera now is a pretty decent digital but I was thinking you had a SLR and thought I'd get your opinion on them.  I'm thinking ahead for birthday/christmas gifts!

Re: **Mel**

  • The camera I have is the Olympus E-510 (my old original DSLR) and the current one I have is the E-30.  The 510 is "retired" but there are others 520/620, I believe, that are pretty much the same.

Most people do NOT shoot with Olympus.  If you went on the photography board on the bump boards 99% of them are either shooting with Olympus and Nikon.  If you like either of those two brands, I'd post on there and see which camera they think is the best for those starting off.  I know Canon people usually start off with the Xsi or Xti.  Nikon, I have no idea.

I also know that if you ever want to upgrade your lenses (Which you will, believe me), you will want to take that cost into consideration.  Canon cameras do not have an image stabilization built into the body (mainly used to lesson camera shake).  Their more expensive lenses, on the otherhand, do have that built in.  Another thing to consider is the ISO capabilities (how the camera handles in low light situations).

Long story short, you'll need to do a bit of research and most of the time the decision comes down to which camera feels the most comfortable in your hand.

When I was doing my research, I came across this web-site which often compares the model you are looking at against the close competitors.

Finally, if you are going to buy on-line really stay away from the to good to be true places.  They often sell what is called gray market cameras.  The most trustworthy places that I have come across are :  Adorama, BH Photo and Amazon.  The prices among the three are very similar.  BH and Adorama often have different hours because they observe Jewish holidays, so keep that in mind when ordering.

So, that's my take on the situation. Let me know if you have any questions, I can try and help out. :o)
