DH's new "pet" (kinda sad)

I need to preface this by saying DH doesn't like most animals. I was able to bring our dog Smokey home only because he was ridiculously adorable but DH stopped liking him and now he happily lives in Texas.

Yesterday, while DH is sitting on our balcony, he notices a baby bird laying behind a screen (the screen isn't attached to the door but leaning on the wall). We don't see a nest anywhere so DH takes it upon himself to try and give the bird some water and a piece of bread but it was too tiny to eat it. We realized it had a deformed wing that, when we flipped it off its back, it would step on it's wing and flip itself over.

Last night, I look on the balcony and there's no bird. It seems it fell off the balcony to the grass below. We came home from church and it's still laying on its back chirping for help. DH was so heartbroken that he went to check on it several times today. Unfortunately, there are a few cats that roam the complex so it's only a matter of time.

I try to stay realistic that it's all a part of nature and there is nothing we could have done but it's still kind of sad. I was impressed to see his fatherly instincts kick in already, though :)

  • That's so sad about the bird! With those cats roaming around though, you are right, it's only a matter of time.

Although, your DH cracked me up! That's so sweet how he wanted to check on the bird and help it!

  • We had a similar situation with a baby bird and neighborhood cats.  DH wanted to protect the bird and had me check on it while he was at work.  Eventually, we hope, it flew away.

Good to hear that YH has started becoming a protective pappa. :)

  • Can you take it to a wild animal shelter in your area?  We have one in ours and they rehabilitate the animal until it is ready to be set free.  We had to take a cardinal once that flew into our window and was injured.

Unfortunately, we had really heavy rain last night and this morning when I left for work it wasn't there anymore. :(
