Marquis

I have a fashion Q for the guru!

When you see someone wearing "the" burberry plaid do you think they're trying too hard to look fancy/designer-ish?

I ask b/c I need new brown shoes and I found 2 pairs that I really liked - both burberry. One was all brown but it didn't fit that great (the store didn't have my size though so I could go elsewhere), the other was partly that plaid. It fit great but the plaid is so obvious... I don't want to walk around like "Hi, I'm wearing burberry and you're wondering how much I overpaid for it."

Re: Marquis

  • Do you think people in Detroit will recognize Burberry?

In general, no.  In fact, one of the receptionists at the firm has a Burberry dress, and I think she looks lovely in it.  But when she wears it, that is the focus of her ensemble.  She's not wearing it with Louboutin pumps carrying a Louis Vuitton signature handbag.

The trick is to not have overkill.  I would definitely judge someone in head-to-toe Burberry tartan (ETA: hat, dress, gloves, clutch, shoes, etc).  Or if you wore those shoes with a Fendi signature bag and a Chanel double-c necklace.

But just having them in general?  No, I think they're adorable.  And far more subtle than most signature designs.

  • btw, do you have a picture? Smile
  • :Butting in:

I think a lot of people in Detroit recognize Burberry.

And I also think they are super cute.  I have a Burberry purse that I love (it's the pink plaid).

  • {butting in because I'm a Burberry whore}

I own more Burberry handbags, coats, and shoes than anyone should.  ITA that the key is to carry or wear only one piece at a time.  The Burberry print, at least on the traditional pieces, is quite vivid.  I once made the mistake of walking out of my house wearing a long Burberry coat and carrying a Burberry handbag and umbrella.  I looked ridiculous but didn't realize this until I walked past a store window.

I also have to add that I don't think that people who wear any designer print are trying too hard to look fashionable, but I also live in a big city where such clothing/handbags/shoes are pretty much de rigueur amongst the working women and gay men.

  • You said tartan! I'm very impressed : )

    I think this is it:

I can't remember though. I can't find the all brown ones but they're similar. They have more of a pointy toe going on though. It's leather (or something like that), no buckles but the leather is sewn in a way that gives it a texture.

I'm really bad at explaining this. sorry.

  • LOL at is_it_over_yet. Your post reminds me of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and the "plaid family."

No problem with me keeping the logos down. I like plain things and I own next to zero designer parapheranalia.

Yeah, yeah, I know.  Some lessons are learned the hard way.  LOL!

  • I think it's classy to have exactly one recognizable-but-not-screamingly-blatant designer piece on. It makes the rest of your outfit look expensive and makes people wonder if the rest of your clothes are designer too, even if they're from Target.?
