Exercising in This Heat

I was trying to get into a regular workout routine, but this heat has put a huge damper on my motivation.

How do you get your workout in without dying?  If you workout outside, what time do you workout?  Have you had to change from outside workouts to inside?  Any tips for exercising in this heat?

Re: Exercising in This Heat

  • I have to get my workouts in before work when it's this hot out.  I'm almost always workout in the morning though, so it really doesn't change my schedule too much. I normally get up around 5:30am to either run or bike before work.

If you can't squeeze your workouts in before work, I would suggest maybe shortening your workout due to the heat or moving your workout inside on days like today where the heat index is supposed to be over 100 degrees!

  • Elissaann--well, DH and I are hardasses and we continue to workout through the heat.  It's significantly easier to bicycle than run in the heat though--the only time we really notice the heat while riding is when we have to stop for a red light!!.  We usually exercise after work--around 6pm or so.  Just be sure to bring plenty of water and you should be OK--just make sure to know your limits.
  • Isn't this heat the worst? I've being running in it some, but not too much. I just restarted C25K and it hasn't been so bad, but I imagine it's going to get worse as the runs get longer. When possibly, I try to run on the treadmill at the gym, but I can't always get there in the afternoons. I'm hoping this cooler spell (granted, it will be in the 80's) will stick around for awhile.

Maybe we need to toughen up a bit and not let the heat scare us so much.  We noticed when we rode our bikes over to a neighborhood party last week it wasn't as hot as we expected.  If this doesn't work then I need to get my @ss out of bed in the morning since I desperately need to start working out.

  • I mostly work out inside during the summer. We have a treadmill, stationary bike, bo-flex (I don't like or recommend it), a pull-up bar, and various hand weights. Last summer, I mostly did P90X videos during the summer which were good with minimal equipment. This summer I've been doing the 30-day shred along with 20-30 minutes on the bike. I haven't been getting in too many outside runs lately, but I'm hoping to start running in the morning a day or two a week, that's the only way I'd be able to get it in. I used to really dislike exercise videos, but I've come around to them being a good way to get a workout in while escaping the summer heat.
  • I've been running in the mornings.  Its the only way to avoid it, and even then its humid as all get-out!  Cycling and swimming are a bit different, its easier to do that in the heat.  I recommend changing it up with some tri action. ;)
  • I just switched to running in the morning. I've done a couple of runs in the afternoon where the heat index was in the high 90's. It was brutal, so I'm switching for now to 5 & 6am runs. I'm liking it so far.
  • i get up at 430 and leave by 5am for my runs. there's no way i could do it at night.

  • I have serious heat exhaustion issues.  Summer before last, I nearly fainted 3 times, once just being outside at a party, once after running and once while helping friends move.  Ever since then, I have had to be very careful.  No amount of hydration before or during helps.  Last week, I waited until around 8:15 so it was cooler and just walked a little over a mile.  If I want to do anything harder than that, I have to do it inside.
