How did you pick your HM destination?

Inspired by TinaL99 post about how did you pick your wedding.

Dh and I had a list, Italy, Ireland and Maui (with a day trip to Oahu).  After a lot of bouncing back and fourth, we decided on Maui.  We could relax on the beach whenever we wanted and also go find our own adventure (hiking, finding not so touristy spots, drive around the island, etc...).  Also, Dh promised to take me to Italy for our one year anniversary, which he did come through with in Oct. 08 (a little belated, but that was ok with me).

Re: How did you pick your HM destination?

  • DH had been on a cruise before but I hadn't.  He really enjoyed them and even though I hadn't been on one before I had always wanted to go.  We looked at the ones that were available the week after our wedding and decided to do the South Caribbean.  I was hesitant to go to Mexico for some reason and the South Caribbean it was!  We had a great time!

  • I kind of left it up to DH.  I wasn't picky, and his parents were paying for it.  His family was (and still is) very into cruising.  He did a lot of research before he proposed and found a great one. It was an 11-night out of Mexico and went to Hilo, Kona, Maui - for two days, Kauai, and Honolulu.
  • Disney. No debate for us.  Why spend our most magical vacation anywhere less than the most magical place on earth?
  • Our plan was to go get married at our honeymoon destination.  Like have a destination wedding / elopment (planned elopement, if that isn't an oxymoron) at a tropical location.  We originally considered Ecuador, but there was some political unrest.  We didn't want to go as far as Hawaii or Bora Bora, and we wanted something all inclusive.  We considered an island destination, but we are really adventurous, and we didn't think an island would have provided enough stuff to do.

So it was Mexico.. and it ended up perfect.. SO much to do, not too far, affordable, phenomenal resort.  We didn't want to go too far because of some family issues, and it all worked out, it couldn't have been more perfect.

  • DH really wanted to go on a cruise, so I said ok, but only if I could pick the ports.  We went on a seven day cruise to Grand Cayman; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico and Belize.  We loved it!

  • We went through four HM destinations. We originally booked St. Lucia but then they changed the flight and I wouldn't get back in time for work the next day. Then we switched to Atuba and the same thing happened. Then we booked St Kitts and the same thing happened. Basically the flights were getting us in the following morning and I had to be back to school. So the only place we could get to quickly and easily was Mexico so we went with that. It was nice but I would have liked the other places more since we both had already been to Mexico.

  • Well I am an incredibly picky eater and don't really like foreign food. We also don't like foreign travel; which includes language barriers, changes in laws, etc, but we wanted somewhere warm. We decided on Hawaii because it was warm and exotic, but still America. It was absolutely perfect. We spent a week on Oahu, based in Honolulu, and a week in Maui. I would have loved to day trip to Lanai and Kauai, but we didn't make it there.

  • We wanted something low key and relaxing-a beach vacation. Since we got married in the summer and it's hurrican season we didn't want to take our chances with that. We decided on Aruba since it's out of the hurricane belt and we LOVED it-we really want to go back someday!
  • We really wanted to go to Belize but it was the rainy season. Then I was planning on a trip to Fiji but DH really wanted to go to Greece so we ended up there! It was fantastic!

  • It turned out that DH's sister was getting married a couple of months after us, so we used her wedding as our honeymoon.  We spent a week in London for her wedding, then took the chunnel to Paris for a week.  It was an amazing trip!  Next vacation we take will have to be somewhere beachy and relaxing - we always end up going to cities, and being exhausted when we get home!

  • We did disney.  My aunt and uncle live in Florida and have timeshares in Disney and wanted us to use those for part of our honeymoon. So they said we could either go to the parks or use one of the other destinations in the timeshare. We decided on the Disney parks since neither of us had been there since '97.  It was amazing.  We stayed at the Animal Kingdom which I would do again in a heart beat, though next time I would do the whole week at Disney so we weren't so pressed for time.

We drove down so we stopped for a weekend in Savannah which was also equally amazing.  We def. want to go back again and will probably do so for an anniversary trip.  The weekend we were there it was cold and rainy so we really didn't proporly experience it.  But we will def. go back!

  • We love cruises and always have wanted to go to Hawaii, so it was a no-brainer.
  • We actually chose the resort over the location.  DH researched many all-inclusive resorts and had his heart set on Couples.  They are only in Jamaica so that worked for us!  We wanted a nice relaxing tropical location.  We chose Couple Swept Away in Negril and it was the perfect place. Romantic, relaxing, good food and drinks, and beautiful beaches.  We can't wait to go back!

Neither of us had ever been to the Caribbean, on a cruise, or to an all-inclusive. So our destination was easily chosen (Hawaii was not in the budget).

Then we were deciding between a cruise or an all-inclusive. I got an unexpected bonus from work so we actually ended up doing both (got a great deal on a cruise).

We did a 7 day cruise out of San Juan followed by 7 nights at Couples Swept Away. Pure heaven- and I doubt I will ever have 2 weeks off in a row ever again!  Sigh......

  • We also went to Couples Swept Away!  We wanted an all-inclusive that was kid-free.  We spent a week there and a week in NYC- it was a nice combination of beach relaxing and big-city fun.
