Update about the guy on the bench

My boss spent much of the morning ringing around various places and was told my most that no one could help him unless he was a danger to himself or others. He has now been out there for a month. Same outfit, hasn't moved more than 100 yards except to stand in the shade or go to another bench. It's hit 100 degrees now and even rained last week.

We are seriously worried he's going to die out there.

So, we went over this morning and asked him his name, which he gladly told us. She is trying to get in touch with someone she knows at the police department to see if they can get a record on him - maybe we can see if there are family around who might help him. We asked about his family and he started to cry a few tears so I'm guessing there is something going on there. He said he had family but they're not "around". My boss offered to drive him to a shelter at 5:30 and he said he would think about it. She's going to check back after work and see.

I'm going to stop by the store in the morning and grab him a stash of food and water and maybe even a clean change of clothes if he doesn't go to the shelter.

Poor guy, it breaks my heart.

That's awful Caroline :(  Sounds like he's going through something tough in his life, you are so nice to help him!  I would maybe ask your local police if they can take him to the shelter, if he wants- just in case to be on the safe side, you never know!

The police won't do anything because he's not hurting anyone or himself. It's so sad that people can be left out there like that with no help.

Wow.  That's awful.  Maybe pay for his cab ride to a shelter instead then?  I dont want him to turn on your boss or do something, you know?  You cant trust people these days.
  • I think she was going to have her husband go with her. I told her not to go alone.

That is awful :(  Did you bring him food/water?  I wonder whats going on with him....
  • Is he not eating at all?  I would think that would be a danger to himself, wouldn't it?  In FL we have what's called a Baker Act, it's an involuntary commitment to a mental health facility for an evaluation up to 72 hrs, usually done by a police officer or dr.  A Baker Act can be done on an ex parte basis which means anyone can complete the paperwork and submit it to the courts, wait around a few hours for a judge to review it and see if it's approved, then an officer is sent to pick them up.  You may want to look into that.  If not, don't just call dispatch at the police department, look online for some phone numbers to higher ups in the police department...keep gong higher and higher until you get some action.
