What can you tell me about living there? There is a position open at one of our offices about 20 min from there and I was just wanting some insight about the are before I jump in and apply. The locations are in Woburn and Dedham. I guess I looking for info on cost of living, economy, job stability etc. I think it would be a long shot for me to get the position any way, but I have to admit the idea is getting me really excited about the chance to live somewhere new!
Thanks for your input ladies!
Re: Boston Ladies!!
{Blog: Adventures of AlaskanAlison}
I grew up outside Boston, so maybe I can shed some light...
Weather: Spring/Summer/Fall are beautiful. Winter is horrific. Not only is it cold, since Boston is right on the water, the wind will literally freeze you to the core. Add snow on top of that. Sprinkle with misery. Hopefully you like to ski/snowboard!
Cost of living: High. Most of my friends that still live in the city have roommates. Others have moved to the outskirts (Medford, Malden, Quincy, Brookline, Cambridge etc) to find slightly cheaper rent. I don't know anyone in their 20s that owns in Boston proper. Most towns within commuting distance (especially those on the commuter rail or bus lines) are still very pricey. I have one friend who bought a starter home in one of these 'burbs for around 350k. It was considered a steal.
Transit: Reasonably good. The T (subway in Boston) only runs until midnight, so that is slightly annoying, but the bus/commuter rail has a wide reach to outlying areas. Cabs are more expensive than in NYC. Cars are pretty necessary if you don't live in Boston or Cambridge.
Nightlife/Culture: Boston is definitely a young, vibrant city. Since there are so many colleges in the area, there are a ton of bars and restaurants and during the school year, young people dominate the city (in a good way). The museums are great, and the sports are a religion. You will definitely not be bored!
Economy: When banking in NYC collapsed a couple years ago, a ton of our friends left the city and moved to Boston for job offers there. They seem to be doing well and maybe even living better (since it is cheaper) in Boston. I vaguely remember my mum (a teacher in MA) talking about a hiring freeze. Not sure if that matters to you.
My read on/experience with Boston: If I hadn't grown up so close to Boston, I definitely would have gone to college there and maybe even stayed. I think the best thing about Boston (and really, any major city in the northeast) is its proximity to lots of activities. Skiing is 2hrs north, the Cape is an hour east, NYC is 200 miles-- DC is 350... the list goes on and on and on. The city itself is greatly improved (and much prettier) due to the big dig. The abundance of young people makes the city seem bustling, but it is nowhere near as overwhelming (or cramped, or expensive) as NYC. All in all, I think it is a great place to live, to raise kids, or just to have fun. GOOD LUCK!!!
I survived the RoLex wedding and all I got was this lousy husband.
One&Only Palmilla - Los Cabos, Mexico
I've lived here my entire life and I honestly could not imagine living anywhere else. Woburn and Dedham are close enough to the city so if you want to spend a lot of time there, its easy to get in and out fairly quickly. However, they are both suburbs and much better (and cheaper) than living directly in the city itself, IMO. I'm not sure what the cost of living is where you are, but it is fairly pricy if you want to buy a house. The areas are really nice and its close enough so you can make day trips to the beach, NH, RI etc.
Traffic along the major roads can be crazy at rush hour times, and forget trying to get somewhere if there is a Celtics or Sox game! But I LOVE Boston and the surrounding areas.
Rose was right on with the weather... winter is cold and we do get snow, but actually we didn't get nearly as much snow as NYC and Philly got this year. The T and Commuter Rail are very popular and safe, I have no problems traveling them alone if I need to.
let me know if you want any more info!
Thanks for the info ladies! Ali that site is AWESOME!!
Mel - How is the cost for renting there? We would not want to buy for quite a while.
Ashley & Josh ~ The Reef Resort ~ Grand Cayman~ May 15th 2010
I lived in Boston while going to college there and miss it terribly. If I can get around there by myself at 18, anyone can do it. I have no concept of direction! The T can take some time to get use to (in bound vs outbound) but once you get it, it's easy peasy! I traveled by T all the time by myself never once felt unsafe. In fact, the biggest thing that happened to us is one of my roommates got flashed hahahahaha
I can't tell you anything else since it's been 12 years since I last lived there. Good luck with whatever you decide! I try to make it up there at least once a year for the day...if you decide to move there we'll have to meet up!
I, too, have lived on the outskirts of Boston my whole life (grew up on the north shore (Beverly), lived in metro Boston (Malden, Belmont, Watertown) for a few years and now live north of Boston, in Wilmington, which is actually only one town north of Woburn. I think these ladies have covered the highlights of the area pretty well. To give you some idea of the rent - for a decent two bedroom apartment in the burbs, I never paid more than $1,350/month total. It gets significantly more expensive once you get into the city - I work in the Back Bay and it is really pricey to live in this area, though there are other areas, like the North End, Allston/Brighton...that are more affordable. But in Dedham or Woburn, you should definitely find something nice for not too much $$.
I am a warm weather person, so if I had my choice, I would live in Southern California. But aside from that, I probably wouldn't live anywhere else. The Boston area is great!!
