must-see/do in Boston area?
We've been out there many times but I want something new to do. It will be the 1st week of Aug. We will be going with my neice(16) and nephew(19) who have never been out there so some things will be repeated. My sister actually lives in Plymouth. So far we have
Aquarium
boston trolley tour
whale watching
mansions in RI
Re: must-see/do in Boston area?
Hi!
I live in the Boston area - some nice things to do (especially with teenagers) might be:
the trolley tour (which you mentioned). But, what is nice about it is that it will drop you off/pick you up through out the day in different locals. You could start at the Back Bay (Shearton at the Prudential), and get the tour to till you get off at Faniuel Hall/Quincy Market. Have lunch there, walk through the North End, have an Italian Gelato! Get back on, and the tour takes you through Charleston Navy yard, through Cambridge, and back through Beacon Hill, then back to Prudential. I would then go over to Newburry for dinner, and hit the Charles River for a bit.
Also, Harvard Square is supper fun...You guys could walk through Harvard, lots of great shops, restaurants, etc...
So, those are my ideas...Have fun!
Do you mean the Duck Tour? I would do that over a Trolley Tour.
Fenway tour is supposed to be pretty fun! If you can, get some tickets to a game- often you can buy them off the street the day of.
I would eat a meal in the North End, not just ice cream. You shouldn't miss a meal in the North End.
The Navy Yard is in Charlestown, not Charleston (which is a city in SC and WV). It's neat history if you are into that!
I agree that Harvard Square is fun and has a lot of energy.
I'm not sure what you've done here in the past, but below I'll C&P my usual suggestions for Boston. On your list, though, I'd replace the Aquarium with the Museum of Science, in particular with a show at the Omni Theater. It's a very cool domed IMAX theater so the show surrounds you (be sure to get a seat high up). It almost doesn't matter what show you pick, the whole experience is just awesome IMHO.
If you wanted to go a little farther outside of Boston, you could check out things like Walden Pond, the House of Seven Gables, and the Salem Witch Museum.
Here is my standard list of suggested things to do in Boston:
Duck Tour - http://www.bostonducktours.com. Fun tour that provides a good overview of the city and its history via an amphibious vehicle. Book tix in advance via the web site
Freedom Trail - This walking tour will take you through most of the historic sites of Boston. You can do a guided tour or I've heard there's a downloadable iPod tour so you can do a self-guided thing.
Public Gardens/Boston Common ? Not such a great visit in the winter, but otherwise nice. There's a Make Way for Ducklings bronze statue here that the kiddies might like if you have them.
Beacon Hill/Charles St. ? Quintessential old New England neighborhood with great architecture and quaint little boutiques to shop in. Just a few minutes walk from the Common.
Newbury Street (shopping) ? Just across the street from the Commons. Great for people watching and grabbing a bite to eat too.
Sam Adams or Harpoon Brewery tours
Faneuil Hall ? Historic area now full of shopping and restaurants.
North End ? our Little Italy. Mike's Pastry's cannolis are famous but be prepared for a huge crowd. Modern is another local bakery favorite
Fenway Park
Museum of Science - great exhibits and a domed IMAX theater that's amazing and shows lots of great documentary-style films.
JFK Museum
Children?s Museum ? Really fun for the kids
Art museums ? We have top-notch art museums: Museum of Fine Art, Isebella Stewart Gardner Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art
Whale Watch Tour
Harvard ? Campus is pretty and Harvard Square is fun to walk around with lots of shops and restaurants.
