Name Change ?

I finally changed my name with social security, DPS and the bank yesterday, so now I have to make sure all other interested parties are updated. Aside from those three, plus work, insurance and people I pay bills to am I supposed to notify anybody else?

Re: Name Change ?

  • Don't forget the IRS!  I think you may be able to change your name via their website--I know you can change your address there.

  • Passport.

Online places like photo ordering companies, amazon, and the like.

Dr.s offices especially if you have any prescriptions.

    Voter's registration.

Hmmm, I don't remember ever doing this one.  I changed my name w/ HR at work and all that stuff seemed to be taken care of.  W-2s were in my correct name, etc.

um, I don't think I did this either.  BUT, I think when you change your name with SS, they might automatically do it?

if you have a mortgage, you might need to change your name with that bank if it's different than your normal bank.

ETA: 3 years later, I still have crap under my maiden name.  l.a.z.y.com.  don't forget things like frequent flyer memberships and stuff like that.  unless you don't care, which is totally my case.

  • My frequent flyer, rental car and hotel accounts are still not done.  They are such a pain in the ass and wanted more info then the social security offices did. grr... i can be added to team lazy.com too when i comes to those.

I think your name is updated with the IRS when you do your social security card since your tax records are tracked based on that information.

  • SS does update your name with IRS. Just gather up your mail for a month or two and see who all sends you stuff. Change your name with them. I think all I have left are utilities and student loans (1 year later). Oh well!
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Thanks everybody! Now that I have a list, I bet it only takes  me another 3 months or so to actually do the rest.
  • yep dont forget the frequent flier/rental car etc places.  i lost out on my mile to China b/c the names didnt tranfer correctly - i'm still fighting wiht them to add it back.

If you do own a house in your name, you need to get the tax info updated.  I'm in travis county, so I had to contact someone at TCAD to do this.

same with car title - make sure that's in your name so that when you go to sell, you can sell!

Oh!  and don't forget about any bonds/stocks, 401Ks, etc that might be in your maiden name as well.  I had some ESPP in my maiden name that i wanted to sell, and I ended up losing out on the good sale price b/c I had to wait for my name change to take effect before I sold.  PITA - especially since I had already tried to change my name twice with them!

  • When I used the forms from this free website it helped me realize a ton of places I was forgetting:  http://www.angelfire.com/ma/dnsassoc/
