Statement of Purpose

Oh, pals... I have to write a statement of purpose for my Grad School app.  I'm daunted.  I can write and write, until it comes time to be concise about my goals.

I am looking to you to encourage me (how's that for concise?Cool) and give me any advice you may have from a similar experience.  Also, if you'd like to tell my why I'd be a great candidate for a Counseling program, I'd welcome a phrase or two.

Re: Statement of Purpose

  • This sounds a lot like the personal statement I'm working on for law school apps.  I never know quite what to say.

Anyhow, I think you would be an excellent candidate for a counseling program because you have a way of listening that makes the speaker feel truly heard.  You also seem to know just the right thing to say that is reassuring and sincere.

Could you talk about your experiences at the school in DC as inspiration for counseling?  Telling a story and building on your goals from there can often be very effective.

  • I'm so excited you are working on this!!! AND, dreadfully recall writing mine 10 years ago!

You'd be an excellent counselor because you rock! You listen, you're non-judgemental, and you have a great sense of humor.

Share a personal experience, or one you've watched someone struggle with.

Bottom line: Whatever you write will be fabulous and you just need to sit down and write it. You're making it more difficult then it really is :-)

Email me if you need me.

  • Qualities to include when saying why you want to go into counseling:

    - You have a great deal of compassion for others

    - You're an objective listener

    - You're naturally calm with a welcoming personality

    - You have a drive to help others improve their lives

    - You're highly empathetic

    - You're one cool ass mofo

You should definitely include this exact phrase.  Cool

  • Juli, I think I'll just use the universally accepted CAM.

Thanks for the advice and the compliments.  I think I have some clarity and direction.

And LISA!  Nice to see you here.  We should meet up in the next few weeks.  Are you doing any summer school?
