Hair help - messy buns

OK, someone please tell me how to make those cute, messy buns that I see all over.  Is it all done with a ponytail holder, or pins, or both?  I'm stuck in a ponytail rut.  I wish I could whip my hair up into a cute bun.  Mine always look craptastic (my  hair pulled through ponytail holder once, than halfway through the second time).  Instructions would be awesome, and maybe some pics.  Thanks!

Re: Hair help - messy buns

  • Oo, last month's Shape had a good tutorial.

I think you do a ponytail and then use bobby pins to make the bun.  Let me see what I can find...

  • I'm wearing a low messy bun at work right now.  I'll try to make sense when describing how I do it.

I use a hair tie that matches my hair color.  I pull my hair all the way through the first time.  Then when I loop it through the second time, I maybe pull 3/4 of the hair through, on the last time (usually I only loop 3 times, sometimes 4) I don't pull any of it all the way through.  Then I adjust it by tucking hair here and there into the holder all around.

It's actually really easy and takes maybe 2 minutes to do.

  • Most pictures and all videos are blocked at work.  If you google "messy bun how to" you'll get lots of results.
  • I make my ponytail like normal - pull all the hair through.  Then I take the hair hanging down in the pony tail and bunch it up to the root of the pony tail. I take a second thin pony tail holder and wrap that around the base of the paony tail and that catches the ends that I just bunched up.  Any hair that falls out of that I oush into either pony tail holder.  Hopefully that makes sense! Good luck!

This is how I did it when my hair was long enough... I chopped it all off b/c it's so easy to do, that's all I was doing! Once you get it, KerCo, you'll never wear your hair down again hehe ;)

This is where i'm hair styling challenged.  when you pull 3/4 of the hair through, does that mean some of it doesn't get pulled into that loop at all, or all of it gets pulled into the loop, but not all the way through?

I watched some youtube videos, and one she did this, but then she took pins and pulled a few sections of the bun up and pinned it.  It 'messed it up' a bit, and made it much cuter.  Maybe you can try something like that?
