preserving bridal gown

I'm a little embarassed to be asking this after celebrating my 3rd anniversary this month, but I'm looking for recommendations of where to have my wedding dress preserved in the Dayton area. I actually live in the Huber Heights/Tipp City area, if that helps narrow it down to north of town places. My dress has been hanging in a spare bedroom closet ever since we got married, but it takes up too much space, especially since we're now in need of a nursery! I don't want it to cost too much, but I want to make sure my dress will be in good hands. Thanks for any recs you can provide!

  • I got mine done at Anthony.  Its not in Dayton but I highly recommend them if you can't find anywhere in Dayton to do it!  If you'd like the contact info I can get it for you.

  • I would call Fox or Heider.  I've heard that they're reputablel companies.

I do some preservation/museum work as part of my job so here's what I'd do.  First, make sure the dry cleaners is not using old chemicals.  You can save money by not using the special dress boxes.  I would only trust the boxes sold by reputable archival supply companies.  Here's an example:

You can also hang the dress in a fabric/muslin dress bag or store the bagged dress flat under a bed.  Don't store your dress in an attic or unfinished basement.  Those areas have huge temperature & moisture fluctuations & will destroy a dress fast.

And you can even wash your dress at home-seriously!  The first Kent article has some details.

Anyhoo, my dress is still in a trash bag in my closet and we got married almost 3 years ago.  Heck, the first year we were married I couldn't even find my dress.  Turns out my MOH took it home when I changed after the reception & her H threw it in the garage somewhere.  I'm obviously not very attached to my dress!

  • Since I don't plan to preserve my gown, I've been trying to think of other uses for my dress. I haven't come up with many since it's only been a couple of weeks.

Someone recently suggested i turn it into a christening gown. A smaller piece could be made into a handkerchief that your child could use at their wedding.

     Best of luck.

  • Thanks! I will definitely look into all this!
