Um, Dow is at 8500 now

Can I hide my money in my mattress now?

Re: Um, Dow is at 8500 now

  • I'm annoyed that so many people are making a bad situation worse.

This fall, Javier Estrada, a professor of finance at IESE Business School in Barcelona, published a similar study in The Journal of Investing that looked at equity markets in 15 nations, including the United States. A portfolio belonging to an investor who missed the 10 best days over several decades across all of those markets would end up, on average, with about half the balance of someone who sat tight throughout.

So moving to cash right now is just fine as long as you know precisely when to get back into stocks (even though you didn?t know when to get out of them).

Buy low, sell high.  It's low now, so buy, don't sell!

  • I know we're supposed to buy now, but I have to admit, I'm not increasing my 401(k) contribution right now!

  • Yeah, this is crazy. My dad is predicting that it will get down to 5000. CRAZY!

We're holding on to a lot of cash (have it in ING) right now, just holding on until the market makes sense.

ETA: We're not selling anything, believe me!

  • Unless you are retiring tomorrow, don't sell a thing.  This is painful to watch and live through, but things will improve eventually.  The worst prediction I've heard is 7500 (although that doesn't look so unreasonable at this point), and I'll bet there is a rally, even if temporary, after the election.
