**Karma**

I just saw that you are 43 days into your short sale process!  We just opened escrow on a short sale that we made an offer on March11th (111 days ago).  We are schedule to close on July 16th (just 15 days after the First Time Home Buyer's $8,000 tax credit expires!).

Just wanted to encourage you to hang in there!  It will be so worth it once you own that house.  There were many times that I wanted to walk away from the deal but I am glad we stuck it out.  If you need a cheerleader to keep you going, I am here!

  • Sorry to "but in" but I saw on the news that they sent the "bill" or whatever it's called to extend the tax credit for another 3 months, as long as you were already in the "process".  So hopefully you all still get it!

Ok, rant. They need to stop with this tax credit. It's not really helping anything. In the past month, without the tax credit, home sales were down 33%. It's a short term fix, and it's just putting the governments further in debt. While I understand it's nice to have cash in your pocket as an individual... it's perpetuating the problems with our nation's debt, which effects EVERYONE, not just first time home buyers.

Ok. Sorry. Rant over. Good luck with your house purchase haha.

  • I bought my house pre-tax credits but here's my take on it.  The tax credit is designed to help people get into a house and yes, is an initial strain up front.  However, I believe the idea was that the people who got said tax credit would apply the money elsewhere which would then stimulate the economy.  For example, you'd buy furniture, spend money on remodeling, buy new windows for an additional tax credit, hire an installer to put in a new floor, whatever the case may be.  The end result would be a positive rather than a negative.  There are going to be people who hang onto the $$ of course but it seems like the overall idea is to put it back into play to better the economy.  Just my $.02.
  • Hey our tax credit paid for our honeymoon, so no complaints over here.... Wink

Yeah, but if you remember the stimulus that we got around christmas, I think... the only places that saw a spike in sales were Walmart and Best Buy, and similar giant stores. Not really helping much. It's kind of like the cash for clunkers thing, if anyone followed what happened after that expired... purchases went down, WAY down. I think people just need to be patient, and the pendulum will swing back. Trying to fix it by all these credits is just making a big mess.

I can only speak for myself but our tax credit would have gone to installing an air conditioning unit in our house (which is said to run me about $4,000), the remaining amount would be used on new windows for the house.  So I guess I would (and maybe will still be able to) stimulate the economy a tiny bit.

I do think that there are a subset of people who will put the stimulus money back into the economy. However, as far as I understand, this housing credit is an incentive for people to buy homes, not as a way to stimulate the economy. The housing market was down before the credit, the credit helped move things along, and now that it has expired, it's back down again. So if this was the whole purpose of the tax credit, it's not making any lasting improvements.

But where is the government getting this money? From other tax payers. I think that's the part that bothers me. When the governments: federal, state, and local, are trying to cut spending my laying off teachers and cutting back police forces by requiring all full time employees to step down to 4 days a week, this stuff makes me angry. Personally, I think governments need to be tightening their belts as opposed to handing money out to people for buying a home.

If you look at the government's finances as you would look at your own, the way you get out of debt is by earning more and spending less. There is no way for the system to correct itself without making some cutbacks. The homeowner's credit just seems extraneous to a lot of other government programs (schools, police, fire departments, shelters, etc). I don't want anyone to think that this is a dig at them for RECEIVING the homeowner's credit, that's not my point. My issue is that this has been considered a priority by our government, and MORE of a priority than cutting government debt or running other programs.

Ok. I'm really done this time. Haha.

    BAHAHAHAHA

  • Okay, back to MEEEEEEE......Thanks for the warm fuzzies! I HAVE had trouble being patient lately. 45 days in, and I'm in need of a hug. I took the train the other day, and it went right by my street, and it drove my nuts.

We splurged on a trip to Great America, where the roller coasters and fried food eased my pain. A long- needed pedi helped too. So, I'll wait. It's ours if we don't give up and well, I want that damn house!
