Guilty Pleasures

This is sort of a poll, sort of a story...

Do you have any "guilty pleasures"?

Are they "public" or "secret"? (Meaning to most people know about them, do you talk about them, do you try to hide them from anyone?)

Do people judge you for them? How do you respond?

***

And, here's the follow-up story.

Aside from the fact that I legitmately am doing academic research on the subject, I am a total Twilight junkie. Not nearly to the terrifying extent of those who plaster their homes with photos and memorabilia or (and only God knows why) get Twilight tattoos. But I'm totally in line (maybe not FIRST, but at least top 100) when new Twilight stuff (books, movies, merch) is released. I like watching the movies on lazy Saturdays. I get giddy when I find wines called "Jacob's Creek" or "Black Swan" or similar. I don't think it's War & Peace and I don't think it's going to solve Global Warming, but I enjoy it and it makes me happy.

Now, I make no secret of my obsession, and I am willing to point out the silliness in it myself. However, the following happened this week (with the release of Eclipse yesterday, obviously my Twilight references/radar have been out in force). I'm used to people lightly poking fun at me, and I totally get it. It's fine. But I had a friend who got TOTALLY on her high horse about how I was wasting my time and how it was devaluing my intelligence and how she just thought it was ridiculous for a person to be a fan of it over the age of 14...and THEN got totally offended when I said "Really? Is it as bad as Jersey Shore?" (which she watches). And, btw, she's never read the books or seen the movies.

So, this started me thinking about guilty pleasures -- how we own up to them, how we talk about them, if we hide them from some people, if people accept the "guiltiness" of them or if they're judgemental, etc...

Re: Guilty Pleasures

  • Aww, I'm sorry your friend was so demeaning about it. :(  My H mocks me for watching soaps, yet his favorite show was WWE Raw or whatever the heck it is, which is a scripted soap opera with topless muscled men.

I've been pretty vocal about my guilty obsessions to the point where I'm in on the joke and am able to laugh at myself with everyone else.

I think this is what threw me. I'm totally in on the Twilight joke...most of the time, I beat people to the punch. It was just weird to me that she had no problem severly dishing it out but then got all butt hurt about it when it was turned back on her in a much lower scale. Maybe she's just not as comfortable admitting/acknowledging a "guilty pleasure" like that?

  • Brings to mind the old adage about glass houses and stones, yadda yadda yadda. :)  She obviously couldn't take the heat! You should have told her: "Embrace your love of gist-pumping guidos if you're going to try to mock other people's 'things.'" Ya know?

Maybe that's why I don't usually mock someone's GPs. I tend to only mock things that are REALLY important - like clothes and grammar.  :)

  • Embarrassed  I watch Disney Channel movies and like them. M knows this and teases me about this.
  • SBS - sucks that your friend was obnoxious about it... I am totally in the camp that if you can't take it, then don't dish it out either.

My guilty pleasure -- trashy romance.  Be it chick flicks, bad reality TV like the Bachelor, Nora Roberts novels, etc.  They make me happy.  DH makes fun of me but I think he secretly enjoys watching these shows/movies.

  • Chick flicks and chick lit ? On occasion, my inner 13 year old comes out and craves this stuff. I don't hide it, but don't flaunt it either. K is a total movie snob, and teases me endlessly for reading/watching these, especially Twilight.

  • I watch the Food Network and E! almost exclusively.  Except in the super early mornings when I get up for Amelia's feedings when I watch Disney Channel or Sportscenter.

I pretty much own up to both but don't go out of my way to advertise them.  I love to cook though and E! is just mindless television after a hectic day.

Aside from TV, I love to go bargin shopping.  I was so proud last night when I left the grocery store and spent $44 but saved $26 with sales and coupons!
