Perhaps I'm just in "mom mode," but...

why the big stink over this texting while driving law? If you're texting, you're not looking at the road. If you're Facebooking, you're not looking at the road. Dangerous! Put the phone down!

  • What's the stink?  Are people upset about ths law?  I haven't heard much of a negative response.
  • I'm with you, but I haven't heard many people complain about it either.

  • I've seen several anti-texting law FB status updates, as well as some boo-hooing on a different board I'm on.

Well, you know, it's that darn government infringing on our freedoms yet again.  ****shakes fist at Uncle Sam****

  • I think it's dumb that I can't even check my email or FB or texts at a stop light though.  I'd like to see them try and stop me from that!  Mwahahaha.

Some of the people talking on their phones are just as dangerous.  Why not an all or nothing approach and make it all hands free like Chicago?

I haven't been griping about it though.  It is what it is.  Whatever.  I'll live with it. It's not like I text while driving anyway, but I do read my messages while sitting at stop lights.

I'm hearing a lot of people using the same argument they did over the smoking ban. You know: My choice, my personal freedom, too much government control, blah blah blah.

My response to that is the same as the smoking issue: When your actions can cause harm to me, I'm totally OK with a law saying you can't do it.

  • KASA - CRACKING UP at the "shaking hand at Uncle Sam" visual.

I already paid the price for using my cell phone while driving in Chicago.

I agree with you LVila.  If you're texting, your not looking at the road and that goes for dialing your phone, fumbling with your IPOD, etc.  It's common sense.   DON'T DO IT!

I do agree that I should still be able to do it at a stoplight or a traffic jam but I understand that opens it up to too many grey areas.

Isn't there a tax now on tanning beds?  That's one where it is getting a little iffy.  Then they could add that to sugar pop, etc.  it raises healthcare costs...

  • I think the slippery slope can be argued in any circumstance.  My question is what about GPS/maps on a phone?  Are they subject to the same texting law?  Is it fair to bust someone for checking directions on a phone, but not on paper or a GPS?

I was wondering about that too.  What about GPS in general, not just on your phone?  Can you update or enter in addresses while driving while using one?  I assume yes, and isn't that just as dangerous as texting?  What's the diff between that or using your smartphone for directions?

The law creates awareness that people need to use common sense and stop putting others in danger, but will it stop people?  Probably about as well as the law against speeding stops people from doing that.

Yes, Tigers, the 10% tanning law went into effect today as well.  That should open some interesting doors.  Can't wait to see what's next!

My GPS makes you promise you won't update it while driving my pushing the check button before it even lets you use it.

I wish we would have just gone to hands-free like other places.

It's just like the seatbelt law.  You're not HURTING anyone by not wearing it but you could incur higher healthcare costs if you got in an accident.  Hmmm.

  • I support the tanning tax just like I support taxes on things like cigarettes, alcohol, etc.  It's an easy way for the government to make money on something that people can choose to do or choose not to do, and on something that is probably not the healthiest.

I would much rather see a tax on these type of things (even things I enjoy like alcohol) rather than cuts to services.

  • My (in dash) GPS makes you promise not to let it be a distraction, too.  It also has limited functionality while moving.

  • Here's the wording:

Pursuant to Public Act 60 of 2010, section 257.602b has been added to the Michigan Vehicle Code; effective July 1, 2010. It creates a civil infraction for reading, manually typing or sending a text message on a wireless 2-way communication device located in a person's hand or lap, including a wireless telephone used in cellular telephone service or personal communication service, while operating a motor vehicle that is moving on a highway or street in this state. A wireless 2-way communications device does not include a global positioning or navigation system affixed to the motor vehicle; It does not prohibit a person from using a wireless communication device to:

Report a traffic accident, medical emergency, or serious road hazard.
Report a situation in which the person believes his or her personal safety is in jeopardy.
Report or avert the perpetration or potential perpetration of a criminal act against the individual or another person.
Carry out official duties as a police officer, law enforcement official, member of a paid or volunteer fire department, or operator of an emergency vehicle.

A section 602b civil infraction carries a $100 fine for the first offense and a $200 fine for a second or subsequent offense [Section 602b(3)]
