You got the Paraguard IUD, right?

How is it?

I think I'm leaning towards that one since it is hormone free.

Re: **Jersey**

  • Yup, I got it in December. I had some issues with the insertion, but from what I understand I was a unique snowflake in that respect.

I love not being on hormonal BC, I don't feel crazy at all, it doesn't affect my sex drive, and I don't have to think about it. Best BC ever, IMO!

  • Have you had heavier than normal bleeding with it??  That was the one thing my doctor mentioned as a possible side effect.

I am really leaning away from the mirena, I like that most don't have a period, but I don't want hormonal BC.

  • To be honest, I don't really know. It's a little bit heavier than it was while I was on BCP, but that wasn't really a regular period, so I don't know what to compare it to.

I'm totally butting in here, but what is it about hormonal BC you don't like?  I ask because wasn't a fan of BCPs but love Mirena.

(And just to clarify, although it may sound like it, I'm not trying to push Mirena on you. Sure, I personally love it, but both M & P are good options and are right for different people. I'm just curious because I did a lot of comparing back and forth before making the decision too. :) )

Not Jill, but I just don't like the idea of constantly flooding my body with extra hormones. I was absolutely fine with it before, but after seeing how long it took for things to get back to normal once I stopped and after knowing how it felt to not have any added hormones and realized that some of the pills made me feel crazy at certain times, I just don't want to go back there.

Thanks for the input! :)   I actually wanted to go totally hormone-free too, but the threat of heavier periods scared the crap out of me.  Before BCPs I had seriously ridiculous periods, and the thought of going back to that (or worse) just scared me away from it.  And knowing that I was paying for the whole thing, I didn't want to risk getting it and hating it so I went with Mirena.  Now I'm glad that I did (no period is awesome!) but hormone-free would have been nice too.  The hormones in Mirena are so much less than in BCPs that a lot of the gripes that I had with the pills (low drive, migraines, etc.) are gone now with M.  So that's good at least. :)

  • Exactly what Jersey said. Until I started realy f-ing up my pills, I never realized the impact the hormones had on my sanity. The last 2 months I have felt amazing, seriosly, the best I have felt in a long time and I know it is from not putting hormones in my body. I would rather risk a slightly heavier period than be crazy.

Gotcha, that makes total sense. :)   Like I said, I know it's different for everyone, and I am just nosy and like to know others' thoughts and experiences.  So thanks for sharing. :)

  • Thanks for posting this, Jill. If I can ever get all the way through a pregnancy(!!) I'm going to go with paraguard. I can't have hormonal bc anymore because of the MTHFR, it increases risk of blood clot. Plus like both you and Jene have said, I have never felt better since being off of a hormonal bc. And like Jene said, it took over a year for me to regulate after going off and that is not cool.
  • I had no clue how crazy BCPs made me until recently.  I haven't had one mood swing and let me tell you, I was a very moody person for a long time.  When I got pregnant, it was within weeks of stopping BCPs so pregnancy brings on hormones so I really had no clue until now how crazy they made me.  I feel so amazing, I swear I even have more energy.  I figure if I'm getting something inserted I'm going with non-hormonal and if it works I'll be so happy.  Rather than getting the hormonal Mirena, realizing it gives me mood swings, then having it removed and risking not having Paraguard then covered by insurance since I'd just gotten Mirena.  Does my thought process make sense???  LOL

Oh and I just got AF today!!!  Woot!!  I called and Dr. P told me to just take BCPs this month, that we we can predict a period in about 25 days and I'll be set to get the Paraguard.  Otherwise if I stay off BCPs we risk pregnancy and another crazy 70 day or longer cycle.

  • Oh and Sara, I totally just love Dr. P, when I saw her the other day she spent so much time discussing all my options.  She is just the best.

See if they can do it before you get your period. My OB said that they only want you to do it during that time if you've never had a vaginal delivery. Apparently if you have then your cervix is always slightly open, so they can do it whenever. If we had waited for a period it would have been a loooooooong time.

  • I will ask them when they call me in a week to let me know about the insurance approval, that would be sweet if in could get it in a week or two.
