Okay...so when we moved into this neighborhood a little over 2 years ago we had a cocker spaniel with SEVERE seperation anxiety...I mean she would howl at the top of her lungs even when she was in the house with us...she had to be able to see us at all times. We got a letter from the city saying that neighbors had complained about it. We gave her to a family with 2 small children about a year ago. We also have an American Pitt Bull who we've had since we moved in. She only barks when we are coming into the garage and when she is ready to be let out of her crate(unless there's something outside getting her attention....We got yet another letter from the city about the barking today! I'm starting to think that maybe someone in the neighborhood is just not a dog person and doesn't want to hear barking. period.
Okay, so now I'm pissed. I am planning to call city hall tomorrow and let them know that the barking is not as big an issue as it is being portrayed to be and that we've gotten rid of one dog but are not letting her go....I'm also thinking about simply asking my neighbors(only three on my end of the street) if they called the city. I really wish they'd just let us know they had an issue before calling the city...WWYD?
I should also say that we usually bring her in for the winter around November anyway but I feel like if I don't get to the bottom of this now we will be getting another letter in the Spring when we let her back into the yard again...Please Help!

i dont want to seem unsympathetic...i agreed that the other dog was a problem...i think i'm also bothered because i though we had a pretty good rapport with the neighbors and they could just tell us what was going on
I hate when people can't confront you directly about a problem.
Does your dog stay inside now while you're not home, or outside? The only thing I can think of that might be agitating the neighbors is if the dog is barking all day long when you aren't home. Otherwise...dogs bark every once in a while. Get over it.
I would ask the city when you call if they have a specific complaint, to see if whoever complained said if the dog barked all day, or whatnot.
I know that you can get a dog collar that has a device on them that will shock them when they bark, but I honestly don't think I could do that to a dog if I had one.
I'm enough of a ball buster that I'd take the letter to every neighbor, politely show it to them, don't even ask if it was them that called, and just say "I'd really appreciate it in the future if you could talk to me directly. We're all mature adults, there's really no reason to take this matter to someone else that isn't even involved in this, is there?"
What does the letter from the city do? Can they force you to get rid of your dog???
It says:
any person who creates or allows to exist any nuisance on or about any lot, street, public way, or place, within the City of Pleasant Grove, is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be subject to a fine.
Please respect this request and cease or abate this problem which may be causing this nuisance.
Well...that kind of sounds like a bunch of bull to me.
I would ask city hall to detail exactly what the complaint is then. How can you fix a problem that you aren't aware of?? Tell them what you've said here.
If you have a good enough relationship with your neighbors, I'd probably go talk to each of them as well. Politely, but let them know you're really disappointed that they didn't come to you directly.

Wow why would they not just come to you?! That's so crazy. I would call the city and explain the situation. Maybe have them monitor the situation somehow. I would definatley confront my neighbors about it.
The only thing I could think of other than the person not being a dog person would be they sleep during the day. (Work Nights or something)GL!!
I'm sorry that your having so many issues with this.
I agree totally with Lauren (Ren0919) that you should take the letters to the neighbors and politely explain your situation. We're all adults here and this can be handled in an adult fashion. I MOST DEFINITELY would NOT get rid of my dog. Plus I would want to know the details of the complaint, b/c it sounds very vague and bogus.
