Another ER Visit...

We were on a walk yesterday & my 6 y.o. & 10 y.o. went on one of the dirt side trails with hills & small jumps. My 6 y.o. went over one kind of sharp hill, lost control of his bike & crashed, pretty much face first. Fat lip, sore nose, bonk on his head above his eye, it really rang his bell. It was so scary, afterwards he said he couldn't see and kept asking where we were.  He must've repeated himself 15 times, the same things over & over.  When we got home he just wanted to sleep. We high-tailed into the ER. It was so scary.  Thank GOD he was wearing his helmet; he suffered a concussion even WITH it on!

Last night was pretty scary; we had been in the waiting room for about 5 minutes and he was trying to fall asleep.  Suddenly it looked like he skipped a couple breaths and he turned white as a ghost.  I stirred him to wake him up & he was really whiny, lethargic & told me he couldn't see anything!  I went up & asked if we could get in quickly, I was pretty worried.  Within the first 2 minutes of talking to the first nurse in the ER room, there were 3 more nurses AND the doc all rushing in to look at him.  They were pretty concerned.  He threw up right as they were starting the cat scan and again like an hour later after he tried to drink a little apple juice and eat a tiny corner of a saltine.

They kept him overnight for observation, and he woke up this morning feeling pretty good and we're home now just keeping watch for any changes.  But wow, I shudder to think what would have happened if he hadn't been wearing that helmet.  For current moms and also for moms-to-be...HELMETS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE!!!  He argued with me about wearing it, and I told him, "No helmet, no bike."  I am thanking the Lord that I stuck to my guns.  Phew.

Two non-insured ER visits within the last two weeks....MAJOR OUCH.  Sigh.  Such is life with rowdy boys I suppose.  That ER staff is getting to know us by name.  ;)
