Curious...anyone still paying for wedding?

just curious if we are the only one still paying off our wedding???

We are almost there about $4000 left.....

Re: Curious...anyone still paying for wedding?

  • We had a pretty modest wedding with 75 guests and tons of DIY stuff to keep the costs down, and we haven't gone on our honeymoon yet, so between all of those factors, we were able to pay for it as we went. Our parents paid for half and his paid for the rehearsal dinner so that it was manageable for everyone. Luckily we don't have wedding debt...school debt is another story lol.
  • we paid for the cake, photographer, DJ and the little details...and ILs paid for the rehearsal dinner (but we didn't know until two days before, and we had the money to pay for it).

My parents paid for the reception, the limo and the flowers...and I'm a little embarassed to say that I don't know if they are still paying it off.

However, TBH, we originally wanted to do something really small on an island, but the big wedding was more for our family (and we actually argued with my parents about them paying for it...my father was all about being "traditional")..but we ended up loving everything

but, I'm with ashley...I have some school debt that is still looming...DH was smart and paid everything with cash as he went.

  • I hate to say this, but we are completely debt free from the wedding. We paid for everything ourselves as we paid for things as they went along. Thankfully, I also don't have a school debt either.

Don't be ashamed of that, be happy! I wouldn't have school debt if I hadn't gone back to grad school. I came out of undergrad debt free, but paying out of state at UGA is ridiculous. I just petitioned for in-state the other day and thankfully have an assistantship for next year, where they will not only waive all tuition, but I'll get an awesome stipend. We're going to use it to pay down the debt from this past year. GRR I hate owing money!

  • no...our parents paid for the wedding. we just picked up the little things as we went along (DIY projects). guess we were more lucky than i realized...

No wedding debt for us. We were very fortunate that my parents gave us a set amount of money for our marriage, and we managed not to spend more than that. We only had 45 people at our wedding, though.

So far I don't have school debt (though I might be returning in the fall for a special ed endorsement if I don't get a job), but we have plenty of house debt. I don't particularly recommend purchasing a house right before a huge recession. Sad

Luckily, no.  My parents were very generous in paying for the food and my dress, and his parents covered the RD - everything else we made sure we were able to pay cash.  Anything we couldn't afford was cut.

But yes, school debt - I still have my undergrad loans, and H has his undergrad and is racking up more with his second bachelor's...we'll be paying that off FOREVER.

  • well, now school loans is a whole different animal...

we'll be paying DH's law school loans until we're dead. i have some school loans, but the tune of 20k doesnt seem so bad compared to his! we dont even bother worrying ourselves with them though..they'll be there forever, no use balking about it.

  • Nope no wedding debt for us!  We paid for it all out of pocket, we saved for 2 years to make sure we didn't have wedding debt.

  • My parents paid for most of the wedding, so we don't really have any wedding debt.  DH still owes them for some of the flowers but that's it.  If we would have had to pay for it ourself we wouldn't have gone into debt for it.  It would have probably had something at the courthouse with our immediate family.  I don't believe in going (hugely) into debt for a wedding.

School debt is another boat completely.  We'll be paying that back for the next 25 years at least. I don't even know what that number is or will be.  H knows, but I won't let him tell me.  I just can't know.  He's in charge of finances so he's got it under control.

  • My parents and his parents paid for most of the big stuff. We were very fortunate that are parents were able to pay for almost everything otherwise we def, would not have been able to have the wedding that we did. Not that our wedding was really elaborate or anything but we would not have been able to afford it. The only things that we actually paid for were the limo, the band, honeymoon and all of the little things which did add up.

Luckily, I actually used some of my student loan money to pay for that stuff. I use the term "luckily" very loosely when I refer to using  some of my student loan money, it was def. better than using credit cards. As far as student loans go...I don't think I will ever be done paying them off. My grad school is over 900 a credit so yeah theres a whole lot of debt there, I'm trying not to think about it. Luckily, I don't have much from undergrad.

  • My dad paid for the reception, mom bought my dress and accesories, and his folks covered the rehearsal dinner. We paid for everything else, up front (invites, flowers, BM dresses, GM tuxes, photographer, musicians, all of it.). If we didn't have the money for it, we didn't get it, including the honeymoon. Honestly, I'm kind of proud of the fact that we paid for more than 1/2 of our wedding and did it on our own.

Now that the house has sold, the only debt we do have is our two cars and my student loans, all of which will be paid of by 2015, if the world doesn't end  in 2012.
