Poll stolen from MM for moms of 4 legged babies

How did you come up with the names for your pets?

My cat Oz was named after the Seth Green's character from Buffy.  I was going to give him a Buffy related name and Oz fit him the best.

My cat Alice didn't have a name for 2 weeks and I would just say random names to her to see what stuck.  I was watching the movie Closer, with Natalie Portman and her characters name was Alice.  I looked at my cat and asked her if her name was Alice and she meowed.  So it stuck.

Murphy was named after the Boston band Dropkick Murphys, since he is a Boston terrier.  And they are one of DH and my favorite bands.

  • Maggie my dog is named after my granny's friend mrs. Maggie because she has big brown eyes like mrs. Maggie lol. She found me 10 years ago and so when she first found me, dh and i would try to guess her real name. One day a commercial came on for an ambulance chaser named morris bart. Dh said that name and she instantly looked at him like she recognized the name, so maggie's second name is morris bart lol. Samba the cat was named because she is very active and rhythmic much like a samba. And shmoopie the cat is named from the seinfeld episode where jerry and his girlfriend kept saying "no you're shmoopie". Her name perfectly fits her personality.
  • Steve and I got Buddy when I was in college - it was my Christmas present (I'd mentioned that I wanted a cat but he said no and I pouted and instead of telling me he's allergic to cats he decided to get me a dog.) So he went looking for dogs and he found one, so he called me and we went over and looked. Put down a deposit, but we didn't have enough cash for the whole thing (he wasn't sure I'd actually go for it so he didn't think about bringing the checkbook). Anyway, the next morning I had to go to school and we agreed to meet on my break to go back and pick up the dog. I had to go back to school so he took him home, we hadn't even discussed a name and neither one of us had one before we left so we decided we'd both think really hard and then we'd pick one from whatever we came up with.

While I was taking my test all I could think about was "Buddy" and how that just had to be his name cause it was so perfect (and I just knew he'd be my buddy lol). So as soon as I got out of my test I called Steve and he was so excited because he'd thought of the perfect name I knew he hadn't because I had but I let him tell me. and he was like it's a little corny, but I think it'll be great. I'm like ok, you tell me then I'll tell you. And he goes ok ready - he is definitely a Buddy. I was like ARE YOU KIDDING. He got this sad sound in his voice and was like "oh you don't like it..." and I busted out laughing and told him it was the name I had come up with. So Buddy was definitely meant to be a Buddy lol

  • Nettie was named after the sister in The Color Purple which is one of my favorite movies.
  • <3 my bumbob & nalabutt. (why i need to put an @ss into each of their names, I don't know)

Spongebob was actually named by my 7 yr old nephew when he was 5. He was actually his kitten. When my sisters house burned down, all the surviving pets got sent out with us family members that were there that day cause they couldn't keep them in the hotel. At the time, I could only take in the kitten. He was 6 months old. I was suppose to give him back but my sister never liked cats and didn't seem to concerned about getting him back. Annnd bumbob and I fell in love.

Nala, I actually held off for a good month to name cause of how young she was when I found her. I guess I felt like naming her would make it harder if she didn't make it. Buut I actually got her name from our own Pammy! I asked for suggestions and hers was the winner! :-)

that made me think of a crazy story about bumbob though, I almost killed him the day of the fire! we had him in a wire bird cage in the side of my moms minivan cause it was cold outside. TJ and I are sitting in the front seats getting warmed up and we had one of her lizard things in there w/ us. I wasn't looking good so we were trying to get it real warm w/ the heat to livin it back up (which worked). I get out and go back to the 'scene'. TJ comes out a bit later. I go back to the van and the heat is still on fullblast! Poor spongebob was drooling, panting and soaking wet. :-(

  • Buster (oldest cat) wasn't mine at first, he was my bro's and his gf's (now wife) until they decided they wouldn't take him with a year later when they went to college. So I didn't name him, but they did because they got him from a lady who went into their workplace trying to find homes for 2 kittens. And they worked at Blockbuster. I later added "kitty" or "precious" to his name, because he's so precious, haha Rocky (cat) was named because it was a name DH and I just said at the same time. Kind of from the movies, because he seemed to have a cute little boxer way when he batted toys. I wanted to name him "Cubbie", but Rocky fits him. "Meow-meows" is his middle name because he can be very mouthy at times And Daisy (dog) was already named from her microchip, she really responded to it happily, so it's a good one for her. I wouldn't have named her that, not my style, but it works for her. I call her Daisygirl, Daze or Girlygirl.
  • My cat Violet was named after my sorority flower. When I met her at the shelter she was so shy and sweet, like a violet!

Our corgi Mikey was named by DH because he looked like a guy named Mike that he worked with.

Our baby corgi Marty was given his name because we wanted something to coordinate with Mikey. We picked the name out before we even decided to get a puppy. I heard the name on the Biggest Loser and thought it was a great coordinating name for Mikey. On a side note, when we found a breader, we had said we wanted a tri-colored corgi that looked like Mikey. She sent me pictures of two of her tri-colored male corgis she had available and guess what their names were? Mikey and Marty!! I took that as a sign that he belonged in our family. His original name was Mike, but he responded to Marty immediately, since that was his brother's name!

Our mutt Sparkey came as a Sparkey from the shelter. I thought about changing his name, but he is so spunky that his name fits him perfectly. If ever a dog should be named Sparkey, it's this dog!

  • Our first dog Buddy it was a name that we came up b/c we could not think of a name at all he looks like goofy and we didn't want to name him that so we stuck with buddy but nick name "Bud"!

Our second dog Dooley he was name after Vince Dooley the Old football Coach for Georgia and plus we are huge GA fans!

  • Miss Kitty was the only thing I could come up with.
Chui means Leopard in Swahili (after our Africa trip)
Eastwood (the cat with no name) because all the black and white animal names were to long or difficult to pronounce.

  • I got the name Lenny from the movie The Butterfly Effect.  I was listing off a bunch of names to DH and this was the only one he liked.  His full name is Leonard though, like Leonard Bernstein the composer.

When I got my cat she was gray with stripes.  I always wanted a Tigger and named her (yes her) that even though she was female and not orange.

Then as she grew up the stripes went away and it turns out she's a tortie calico.  Oops!  Everyone thinks she's a boy too.
