I think I am going to throw up

I just heard on Rachel Maddow about the NSA spying on and recording phone conversations of Americans working abroad.  Apparently some of the conversations were shared between NSA employees as in "hey, get a load of this!"

CNN also has reported this.

Six or seven years ago, I dated someone who spent 3 months working for the US embassy in Saudi Arabia.

Holy crap do I feel violated now.

Re: I think I am going to throw up

  • As someone who regularly spends weeks at a time overseas away from my husband...I am so with you.

This is disgusting. I expect the government of Zimbabwe to tap my calls, and know they do when I call our office there; but c'mon, aren't we at least a little bit better than Mugabe??

"We tend to be patronizing about the poor in a very specific sense, which is that we tend to think,
  • Rest assured that if this happened, they are long gone (can't renew a clearance when you break the rules of the Agency).

No kidding!  He was told the Saudis had the whole place wiretapped, so I feel you.

And to pull the lurkers minds out of the gutter, as I told Fenton over on E08, we usually reigned it in at the PG-13 point because we knew the Saudis were listening in.  But still.  Yuck.

  • Yeah, I've always had my suspicions. So we don't let things get out hand :)

I've met enough "regional security officers," to know that our intelligence services have their fair share of frat boys who never grew up...

I believe it.  I have heard things from people who have had lie detector tests as part of security clearances.  Those people have a strange obsession with people's sex lives.

  • Actually, I take a weird joy in knowing that my conversations are spyed on.  Like, when H goes to China, and I'm absolutely sure he's being listend to, I'm at my dirtiest.  It just amuses me.  These people don't know me.  I mean, if they get their rocks off, fine by me.  They don't know me, and I'll never meet them.  It's kind of a thrill, like a really safe exhibitionism.  That, and there's always the hope that I just really embarrassed some Chinese guy.

  • I feel dirty. ?I really hope they're not interested in anyone in the Czech Republic.
