Home security systems?

We just found out that our neighbors, two houses down from us, got broken into.  We're getting an alarm system hooked up ASAP!!!  You need a home phone line for that, right?  I mean, we have our giant dog which is a pretty good security system on his own, but I'm thinking we might need to up things a bit.  Someone stole their freakin Expedition from the DRIVEWAY right in front of the house!!

  • Well, we just set it up with ADT and they're adding a cellular package or something so we don't have to worry about the phoneline.  Well, we went and talked to the neighbors and they think it was probably one of the young punk kids who live in the neighborhood (quite possibly the one that Adam tracked down for making obscene gestures towards me).  They broke into the backdoor, ransacked the house, didn't take the tvs or computers or anything, but took the safe (which had a spare key for the truck in it) and took the truck

  • Oh my gosh! I"m glad you're getting it set up. If anything it'll be peace of mind. We have the system hooked up in our house but its not activated but we still have the ADT sign in our front yard. Maybe that'll sway anyone from trying anything.

  • Yeah, we have an ADT sticker in the front window that the previous home-owner put up, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's going to stop someone.  An angry 100+ pound great dane mix barking up a storm at you will probably help, but sometimes when we go places, we take him with us, so I'll definitely feel safer leaving the house unguarded.

  • Same here except ours is a Yellow Lab, and hubby has a take home squad so that makes it nicer too. I am not sure if it matters but from experience at work alarm systems really don't deter intuders, make sure you check with your alarm co about policy, some try calling you first and if they can't get ahold of you or the numerous back up numbers then they call the police by then the intruders are long gone. Just my opinion though
  • that is scary, our house came with an alarm and im home alone alot since hubby is a cop, we set it up. no doggy here but i do have a watch cat, lol
  • So they caught the guy who broke into our neighbor's house.  Less than 24 hours after calling the police!  Good job, Madison County police officers!!!  Turns out it was some kid whose dad has a house down the street from us.  The kid doesn't live there, but found out that the neighbors were going out of town, so decided to take advantage of the situation.... a couple of the neighbor kids just came and told Adam the whole story.  It was NOT the kid who made obscene gestures though, so I was wrong.

  • Make sure to check your local police on how they handle alarms.  The alarm company commericals are bogus and it doesn't happen like they say.  Alarm companies can hold a pending alarm for an undetermined amount of time (probably depending on their policy) and don't call police right away.  Also, once an alarm is called in to police, they sometimes aren't dispatched right away.  Unfortunately, there are A LOT of false alarms so they're not usually a high priority and if the agency is busy with verified emergency calls, alarms can be held pending until someone is available to go.

  • Our house also came with an alarm system, and we also have a dog.  Although she is much more likely to lick someone to death and then help pack their car with our valuables than she is to scare them off.

  • We still need to talk to the county sherriff's department, but we just called ADT back, and they said that as soon as the alarm goes off, they try to call us.  If we don't answer, they automatically call the police.  So I guess it all depends on the police response time.... I mean, it's only 40 bucks a month for the monitoring service, so we might as well.... if anything, having the alarm system will deter the dumbass kids in the neighborhood from doing anything (hopefully) if they know we have it and they know we aren't messing around.  Most of the people know that Adam is pretty hardcore when it comes to his property and his family and they know that I have a shotgun and won't think twice about using it if someone comes in my house if Adam's not home, so the alarm system is just an extra precaution

Well, if THAT doesn't make me fit the Alabama stereotype, then I don't know what will!!!  haha

  • Sometimes peace of mind is priceless and your homeowner's insurance will also go down.  If you get a sign to put in your yard and stickers for the windows, that will deter people, too.  I agree on the shotgun situation, good idea!
  • Our home security system is Matt and a baseball bat. I have a can of pepper spray in my purse, too, and a taser-like stun stick that cops carry.

I would be more concerned if we didn't share walls with neighbors on either side and live in a pretty quiet neighborhood. When we get a freestanding dwelling, we're definitely going to look into getting a gun. I was going to a while back and got sidetracked.
