How many??

I was just looking at the post about name change and was wondering how many copies of the marriage certificate I actually need. Some places don't require you to hand over a copy just show it, so how many should I get?

Re: How many??

  • I ordered 5, I was figuring the main things: DL, SS card, passport and then 2 extras. But after making some phone calls yesterday to change some of my bills, I realized some of them actually need the real thing. Oh well, I guess I will have to send away for more.

Btw - I love that pic of you guys

  • Thank you! We just got our pics back yesterday so I need to find time to sift through them to find some good ones to post.

Ok, off subject but it costs $10 per copy of the certificate so, Im trying to avoid getting too many extras!

    Thanks for the input!

  • Wow, that's expensive. Ours are only $2 a copy, I just didn't want to have a bunch extra sitting around or waste the money.

  • I went on the advise of a friend of mine who got married last year and got 4. She said that was enough for what she needed to get done.

  • Our state only gives us one?  They didn't give us the opportunity to pay for extras.  The lady at the recorders office said the only place that requires you to send the copy with them is passports.... I guess we'll see how it goes when I start the process in August.
  • i got 2 copies and so far i still have both. i just needed to present it, but i got it back. when i change my passport, i guess i'll have to send it in, but im in no rush.
  • I think 2 is fine. Or helll, even 1 is good. I didn't everything with 1. The only thing I didn't do yet is my passport, which I know needs it sent in. You DON'T need a separate one for DL, SS, banks, etc, because they only need to SEE a copy, they don't take it from you. I believe passport is 1 of the only normal things that people that have requires you send it in. I think all these people getting 5 or something are going overboard! It's REALLY not that hard of a process ladies!!
  • I have 3 including the original... so we'll see how far that gets me!

  • I only have one. I just had to show it to SS, the DMV and the bank, haven't had to give it to anyone, so I don't know why you'd need as many as 5...

  • Uh, one.  No one KEEPS it.  Get a back-up copy just to be safe but you really don't need more than that.

They need to SEE the official copy but so far, not one place has wanted to keep it.

I am saving my passport for last because I have to send them the official one.  But they said they send it back.

This question was asked on my local last year and not one of those ladies ever needed more than 2.  Most never even got one copy.

  • I have one and so far that is all I have needed. I haven't changed my passport though. I wasn't planning on changing it until I actually need a passport again. Do any of you know of any benefits of changing it now? I figure if I change it now it will just expire earlier and I don't even know the next time I'm leaving the country. Is there like a married discount or something haha?
