Poll about your engagement ring

I will post more later about my specific situation later but for now I have a poll.

1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting?

2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring?

3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been?

 4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?

Re: Poll about your engagement ring

  • It came with some kind of insurance, but to maintain the policy I had to bring it in every six months to have the setting inspected. I've never done that. It has to be brought in to the store it was purchased from and now we don't live in the same city so I think it's safe to say the policy is void now. I think it was a lifetime policy, assuming I kept bringing it in. They would have replaced the diamond if it ever fell out or was damaged.

    No insurance

I've never had any problems. I got it in 2003

We don't have content insurance on our house so I wouldn't have that option. My mom did go through her home insurance when her ring was stolen and they replaced it. My grandma, too.

  • There is no diamond in my e-ring and it would not be worth insuring.  Sorry, I can't help you.

I don't even have an e-ring. The diamond in my wedding band is itsy bitsy. Sadly, I don't even like my wedding band any more. :(

  • My e-ring/wedding ring (one and the same) is an antique from my great-great grandma. It is worth less than $1,000 and not worth insuring. There would be no way I could replace it.
  • 1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting? Just a 1 year warranty.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring? no

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been? no... 7 years

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable? absolutely!!!

  • 1. My ring has a 10 year warranty from the jeweler. I am not sure of the specifics, but when a stone fell out (and was lost) a few years ago, they replaced it at no cost.

    2. We have insurance through our home insurance (but it covers the ring anywhere).

    3. A side stone fell out, not sure why. They fixed it, checked the other stones, and they seemj to be nice and tight. I had my ring for about 6 years at the time the stone fell out.

    4. Our home policy had such a small allowance for jewelry that it wouldn't have even come close to replacing the ring. We bought a seperate rider for each of our rings to cover replacement, or damage. Based on the value of our rings, I would absolutely go through our insurance policy!

    1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting? Yes there is a lifetime warranty on the ring, but I have to take it in to Peoples get it inspected every 6 months.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring? No, it's not worth enought that it needs to be added seperately to our insurance policy, it's covered under our house insurance.

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  No, but I might get it re-dipped in white gold the next time I take it in to get inspected since that's covered under the warranty.

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?  Yes

  • Our store closed down but they said the ring should be professionally inspected annually to make sure the settings are still good.

We don't have specific insurance on it, but it is covered under our home insurance. That said, if something were to happen, we probably wouldn't make a claim and would just replace/repair as I wouldn't want our premiums to go up.

  • 1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting?

Not sure about my e-ring, but there is a diamond bond on my wedding band if I get it inspected every 6 months, it covers any lost diamonds.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring?

Nope, I talked to insurance and the value is too little so it is covered by our regular home insurance.

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been?

Not with my e-ring, but a diamond did fall out of my wedding band :( It was within 2 years of purchasing it, and even though I wasn't regularly getting it inspected, it was so new enough so they covered it by the diamond bond. Still sucks though, it took 2 months and they replaced the diamond by a crappier diamond, now it is obviously the worst diamond in my band (it's a semi-eternity band).

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?

Probably, but I think we have a pretty high deductible so I doubt it would be worth it unless it was the solitaire from my e-ring that was lost.

  • 1. My ring came with a 3 year warranty.  DH purchased an extra year.  I have to have it inspected every 6 months to keep it valid, and they siggest I continue to have it inspected at no charge for the rest of my life.

    2. Nothing specific.  But we did enquire about it with our insurance company.  They told us to get an appraisal and keep it on hand incase anything ever happened.  Our homeowners policy covers up to $15K in jewelry or something like that.

    3. I got my ring in 2006.  I have definately had some issues.

-It was starting to yellow (its white gold) so I sent it away to get re-plated in rhodium(sp?). It was gone several weeks and came back with what looked like a burn mark in it. I had to send it away again, but this time it came back o.k.

-My E-ring appraisal came back valuing my ring signifigantly less than DH paid for it. I spoke to the store and head office about it.  They "made it right". I was offeref either a new centre stone or a refund of the difference.

     4. My e-ring is far less important to me now then it was when i got it.  Back then, I wanted the biggest and best I could get.  Now my marraige is whats important to me.  If my ring(s) was damaged or stolen, I think I would just get a cheap band to replace it, therefore not going through insurance.

  • No idea if I have anything from the jeweller, but it doesn't matter - he doesn't appear to be in business anymore.

To the best of my knowledge, its insured under our house insurance.

I've never had any problems with my ring.  I've had it for  like 6 years.

  • 1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting?
Not sure about warranty, FI ordered it online.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring?
    Nope.

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been?
None at all! It's a little big, but only when my hands are really cold. Waiting to have it resized with the wedding band.

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?
It is covered through our home insurance. FI handled it. I believe loss and damage is covered

  • 1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting? Yes, my ring(s) were custom made so there is lifetime warranty on them, we have never had any issues at all.  Mind you my first ring I had a million issues and the store had it more than we did, so we returned for a refund and DH had it custom made, we are so much happier.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring? We have it (along with a few other pieces) covered under our house insurance, it was not worth getting seperate insurance for it.

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been? Not since getting the custom one, my first ring like I said the stone kept coming loose, it kept turning yellow, within days, and they had it more than we did, I will leave the store nameless, but for us custom was the way to go and I have had zero issues with it, had my wonderful ring since 2004

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?  without a doubt.

  • 1. Is there some sort of warranty on your ring from your jeweler? If there is, is it life time, etc.On the diamond or the setting? Yes, there is some insurance, but also the jeweller is a friend of my DH and stands by her work.

    2. Do you have a specific insurance on your e-ring? Yes, MH bought extra insurance on it before he even proposed!

    3. Have you had any problems with your ring since receiving it?  How long has it been? My center stone was a bit loose in the claws when I first got it. Not so much that it wiggled but when you tapped it you could hear it move. When I took it to get it cleaned before our wedding she checked the claws and tightened it up. Now its unshakeable. I have had it for 10 months.

     4. If you don't have specific insurance would you go through your home insurance if your ring was damaged and was irreparable?  Yes, I would. However, some home insurance doesnt cover stuff like this. You should check your policy very carefully just in case.

A girl I once worked with had a terrible time with hers. The diamond and setting came off the ring (like cleanly, just fell off) while she was doing yard work one day. She didnt notice immediately and had mowed the lawn and worked in the flower beds among other things. They searched for 2 days, combing the backyard inch by inch, with family all helping. But to no avail. It was gone. They hadnt bought extra insurance, and they thought their home insurance would cover it. Nope. Their insurance only covered jewelry worth under a certain amount. Her FI had saved for almost a year to buy her ring, and they ended up having to buy a new diamond and have it reset, on top of all their wedding costs.

Its not worth all the tears if something happens. Check your policies carefully beforehand!
