Worst 4th Ever... Car Got Broken Into

I'm so mad and scared at the same time, I need to vent.  This morning, I took our dog to the local dog park and during the 20 or 30 minutes that we were there, 3 cars were broken into.  Of course, mine was one of them.  I've never had anything like this happen to me.  DH and I lived in St. Louis city for 4 years and we never had anything like this happen.  We moved out to the suburbs just last summer and now we get broken into?!  WTF?!

Of course they stole my purse, so I've spent the last couple of hours on the phone cancelling everything.  It's such a pain and I'm so mad at whoever did it.  I might have had about $30 in my wallet... it wasn't worth it, thief!  It just ruins my life for a few weeks trying to get everything settled.

Plus, the purse they stole was the only really nice thing I owned - it was a Coach purse that I got as a gift.  I bought the wallet inside myself and I'm guessing that between the purse and the wallet, it was about $300-$400.  Not gonna get that back.

The car had the passenger window smashed in with what the cop thought was a crow bar.  The window is dystroyed, the frame around the window is bent, and the side mirror is broken.  Plus, it's a holiday so I can't get any info from insurance or the car shop.  I guess I'll have to wait for insurance to tell me where to fix it?  I have no idea, I've never had anything like this - not even an accident.

I'm just so pissed.  Who breaks into cars at 9:30 in the morning in a suburban park?!  I guess you're not safe anywhere anymore, huh?  I guess it could be worse.  I'm just so mad and so afraid at the same time.  :: sigh :: Thanks for listening.

Re: Worst 4th Ever... Car Got Broken Into

  • Oh honey I am so sorry that happened to you...that's awful!  And how horrible of them, you couldn't have been that far away.  That's pretty bold.  I'm just glad that you didn't come back sooner and get hurt too.  Someone that bold would not have hesitated to strike out with whatever they used to break the windows.  You are not hurt...that's the most important thing.
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • OMG that's terrible! :( I wish there was something I could say to make this less sucky... but I can't think of anything. :( Hug!
  • WOW sorry to hear that. :( At least you weren't hurt though.

  • UGH.  I'm so sorry that happened.   I don't know... does insurance cover any of that?

EDIT: I'm sorry, I re-read about the holiday and the offices being closed.  I'm pretty sure insurances do cover for breaking into cars... T's and P's being sent in any case.

  • Uh that's annoying, I'm sorry!  What park were you at?
  • Cipolla - I sent you a PM! :)

  • It is totally nerve wracking when something like that happens to you. I've had my cars broken into twice (for all of about 3.00 in change on one of The Mr's hoodies) and even stolen once(to drive about 10 blocks and be ditched on a side street). I've also have had my back windsheild be randomly smashed while at work. Everyday when I go down to our lot I breath a sigh of relief when nothing else has happened. Thank God you were not there though if the person decided to get violent. People who do these things suck big time and deserve to have their hands fall off!

  • Talking to my insurance-selling husband....

Homeowner's insurance (or your renter's policy) would cover anything stolen FROM the car. (i.e. purse, money, etc)

Comprehensive insurance on your car will cover the cost of replacing the glass (although that will probably be under the deductible, so not worth it)

That SUCKS! Lesson learned: never leave your purse in your car, even if you think it's safe and quiet and are only gone for a few minutes. Mofos. I hope you recover some of the costs, and try not to let it frighten you too badly. Things like this do happen anywhere. You just have to be prepared and protect yourself and your belongings at all times. ((hugs))

  • *hugs* to you.  Same thing happened to me a little over a year ago at the dog park.  I intentionally left my purse at home but they broke in for what I assume they thought was a purse but was my lunch bag!  It is so un-nerving but in my case, I would have loved to have seen the looks on their faces when they dug into my "purse" and found leftover tupperware from lunch!!  I have glass coverage on my insurance so I had to pay nothing to get it fixed but it was such a hassle just for that.

I never ever ever leave my purse in the car when we go to any park - not even in DH's trunk because ya just never know.

  • I'm sooooo sorry to hear this!!  Poor thing.  I know its such a violation of security and peace of mind.  H's car got broken into twice last year and mine once.  All within months of each other.  His Ipod got stolen w/ the adapters and everything, then the next time they rifled through all his papers, etc. inside.  When mine was broken into, they stole all the change (prob a whopping $3-4 total) out of the console, and threw all of my cd's and papers on the passenger seat.  I can't go anywhere w/out locking the doors now.  I hope it all gets resolved for you quickly.  Sending well wishes your way!!

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your terrible experience, Kellie! What an awful way to spend the 4th.

As someone who had her car window broken twice last year - it is more than likely going to cost less to replace than your insurance deductible, I wouldn't bother to file a claim (but definitely call them just to be sure. They can advise you). I do hope you have renters insurance, like dvshaw said, they will cover your stolen items.

This sort of thing really does happen everywhere. My parents live in small town USA (like Rockwell-style picturesque New England small town) and they are experiencing a huge amount of car break-ins and window smashings. It totally sucks and I know how violated you feel, but please don't let it get you down too much!

Your thief must  have been great at breaking windows, then!  Progressive called me this afternoon and their estimate is already over $2,000... so far.  I say "so far" because they haven't cleaned up any of the glass yet.  Once they do that, they might find more rips and tears in the seats/dash which will increase the estimate.  There were also glass chunks in the vents, so that may have caused damage too, but they can't tell yet.  My deductible is $500, so I'm still out the $500 for no reason, but at least it's not the whole cost!

  • That's so terrible! I know how you feel, though. When I used to live with my mom, apparently we were next to a meth house, and our cars got broken into multiple times. I just learned to not keep anything in my car of value (to me or anyone else), and if I was going to keep my purse in the car, I always lock it in the trunk. I know the feeling of violation, though, it's an awful feeling. It does get better, though. I hope your car gets fixed so the reminder of what happened goes away! GL!

Wow! They really mangled your window! Both times they just punched a hole in the glass. I think the replacement was about $180. Being out the $500 definitely sucks, but it beats the $2000!

Both times our car was broken into, our GPS mount was on the window (although the GPS was never in the car). DH would always forget it. So they had a very specific target and didn't do much more than pull on the cords and open the glove compartment. Our new car has built in GPS so we won't have to worry about it anymore.

Yeah, don't keep your purse in the trunk either.  My purse was underneath the passenger seat and the cop believes that he watched me lean over and put it there, or else he wouldn't have known which window to break.  If I had put it in the trunk, he would have seen that too.  A lot of back seats fold down nowadays or they could even use the trunk-pop button once they break in.

Either way, don't leave anything in the car period!  Ever!
