I'm thinking about asking my gyno about this the next time I go. I was reading a magazine and saw an article about polycystic over syndrome and I'm not one who usually thinks I have every disease I read about but this one raised some serious red flags and I always trust my gut. The symptoms are sharp pains in lower abdomen-Check
acne breakouts- check
fatigue-check
irradic periods- check
Painful periods- check
and the weirdest symptom of them all; skintags- check I have a couple on my upper legs and one under my arm.
Then it said when you are on the pill the symptoms are often masked and for the last 3 years Ive been on the pill. I went off of them last month and my body went haywire and the stabbing pains are a well....a pain. Also, my aunt has this (dad's sister) and she is completely infertile and has had to be in the hospital because the cysts get so bad. So next appt, I'm getting tested for it because it can get worse if left untreated.
Re: PCOS
yeesh! i'm sorry you're having so many issues with your lady parts. I'd totally bring this up at your next appointment and, hopefully, there's something they can do to help you out!
You've heard what I've done, not what I've been through.
If you were in my shoes, you'd fall the first step."
And if she doesn't test you for it, find a gyno who will!! Keep us posted. My fingers are crossed for you.

I'm sure she'll test you if you are having symptoms AND have it in your family! Definitely get it checked out ASAP though. One of my teachers in highschool had a cyst that was so crazy, it wrapped around her ovary and grew so bad that it basically strangled her ovary to death and she had to have emergency surgery to have it removed. They discovered she had another huge cyst on her other ovary and the whole ovary would have to be removed, so if she wanted a kid she'd have to have it like right then, and her and her husband were planning on waiting several years. It was at the end of my senior year, so I never found out what she ended up doing.
Yeow! I hope that you don't have it but that you're able to find a way to manage the symptoms.
Going on or off hormonal birth control will do crazy things to your body for a few months, sometimes. I react particularly badly to HBC, and it took my body about four to five months to get completely back to normal each time I went off the hormones. It has to re-calibrate, so to speak.
Actually, my body has never been completely the same after the mini-pill, but I think some of that is just the natural "maturing" process. I don't mind lighter periods, but I do miss knowing when I could expect them down to a three-hour window. I also need to check with my doc to make sure that my new mid-cycle spotting is just ovulation bleeding and not something problematic... Sigh.
A few years ago I had gone off for about 4 months. My skin also got very oily and I got acne (which I never had). I think that is something your body has to readjust to. As far as the pains, I think you're doing the best thing by checking it out. It's better to have that peace of mind without a doubt.
I have PCOS. I was diagnosed in university because I once had a period that lasted a month (Yay me!).
I have all the symptoms you do except for the skin tags. My abdominal pain is sometimes so bad I feel like I could die.
As far as I know BC pills ARE the treatment. They are meant to help regulate your system. My doc put me on BC pills and told me to let me know when I wanted to have a baby because I might need fertility drugs like clomid etc. He also told me to lose weight, although that only lessened my symptoms it didn't make them go away (alot of PCOS ladies are overweight). I am currently off the BC right now because I want all of that out of my system since I am guessing H and I will try for a baby in the next few years....
Anyway, go see your doctor for sure. But I don't think it means you are infertile because my mom and sister have similar problems and they had kids very easily.
Also, I exercise very regularly and eat very clean. One of the symptoms is Insulin resistance which means that your body can't handle high sugar things very easily.
Good Luck
Hey thanks! This helped me a lot (along with everyone else's comments). I try to eat as organic as I possibly can but with my husband its hard to because he's a pizza and chicken fingers kinda guy. I'm currently trying to dump all the weight I gained in college, if nothing more than to just feel better about myself. I"m glad it doesn't always end in infertility, I just saw my aunt's case and she wanted a family so bad that she fell into a hard depression and still hasn't fully recovered from that blow. I'm definitely going to get checked soon and hope for the best. I"m not like freaking out or anything I"m just being cautious.
I have suspected that I may have PCOS, but haven't really asked the doctor about it bc I am already on BC. From everything I read, bc is the treatment. If/when you want to get pregnant, you may need some fertility drugs. I know several ladies with PCOS who have had children after a round or so of the fertility drugs. I'm definitely not an expert, but I wouldn't worry about infertility yet.
