What kind of "diet" do you and YH eat?

So FI and I are taking abut our eating habits, and we realize when when we lived with our parents we were consuming a meat product nearly everyday, but when we are on our own (both in grad school and now) we eat meat maybe 3 times a week.

It definitely cuts down on our grocery bill, but I don't know if we'd ever make the transition to full on vegetarian, no matter how much better we feel after a veggie meal. lol

  • I answered Part-timers. we eat a ton of eggs, beans, and lentils so meat is unnecessary most nights of the week. i think what's stopping me from the push to no meat is Tofu. I hate it.  i just... i just cant do it. 

    plus there's no chicken and dumplings in a meatless lifestyle.

  • We're also part-timers. There's a lot of whole grains (including our favorite protein-rich friend quinoa), fruit and veg, with some poultry or fish, depending on the day. Red meat is a treat.

  • I'm full time meat eater because I have to be. With the small portions that I eat, I have to get my protein in there everyday whether it be at lunch, dinner or both. My mom keeps trying to scare me that if I don't eat enough protein my hair will fall out, and she freaks me out to the max when she says that.

  • Let's just say H loves meat, and esp. red meat. I am more of a health freak and we eat pretty healthy. We usually have a meat every night but we have been trying to do more fish recently as well.

    geeze louise, mom!  i understand the issues with getting enough protein- i've had bouts of hypoglycemia in the past, and it can be super difficult to find foods that have high enough levels but dont get old fast.   

    @jaybers: you know the only time i could ever allow myself to try to like tofu is if it's being cooked as tofu and not a meat substitute, like in a stirfry or something. but even then, i just cant do it. why bother moving into vegetarianism if you're going to eat something pretending to be meat?

    i have yet to venture into quinoa - although i probably should. my mom LOVES it, but i worry that the heavy grains would take their toll on DH in a very unpleasant way. He grew up in a very midwest suburb kitchen. potatoes, corn, and lots of meat- i've been pushing his boundaries for almost 4 years now, and he's doing really well, but his body has just never encountered some of the more hardcore "health" foods.

  • @jb and a PS. as a result of my tofu issues, i've been hesitant to try tempeh. but i feel like tempeh is always cooked in more appetizing meals. like..tempeh tamales. 

    but that could be like the girl who likes orange brick cheddar moving straight into camembert instead of stopping off at brie first.

    I know, right? I remember in college there was one dining hall with all of the crazy vegan stuff... Veganaise, vegan bacon, vegan bologna etc. etc. ... I was like, why do vegans need bologna or bacon? Isn't the point *not* to want those things? (BTW, vegan bologna both looks and tastes disgusting. Not that you needed to know, but just for future reference.)

    If you decide to wander in to the quinoa aisle, definitely get the pre-rinsed kind. We use it as a rice substitute (it has a similar soft, yet al dente texture as properly cooked rice) when we can't takes no more rice (I mean, really. I'm Indian and errything, but there is a finite amount of rice I can take.)

    How does YH feel about couscous? If he can tolerate couscous, he might be okay with quinoa....

     Hahaha... actually I eat all kinds of stuff. I am definitely trying to get a little more healthy variety in there. But I don't eat tons of meat, and when I do it is usually chicken. I love  my carbs, no doubt about that. But I definitely need to start eating more fruits and veggies.

    DH is a huge salad eater. He eats salad for breakfast, that frickin weirdo... lol. He is also really into lamb (eh gag!) and likes the dark pieces of chicken. Whereas I like the breasts (mmm yum lol).

    But one thing we definitely love is lots of ethnic food. Mediterranean, Asian, Indian, Mexican, etc. We love to try out new food.

  • H is a huge red meat eater but I can't really eat any kind of beef because of a certain experience where my parents killed my cow when I was 10 (sorry if that's TMI).

    I'm a huge chicken eater though.  I cook it probably 3 or more times a week.  We also eat a lot of eggs.

  • I could easily be a vegetarian.  H not so much.  We maybe eat it two or three times a week.
  • Im the special snowflake.

    I eat almost nothing. I gave up meats when I was like 6. Its not a dont kill the moo cow thing, I have mild sensory issues with food. A cheese burger smells & looks & tastes amazing but if I put it in my mouth & try to chew it it makes me sick. I eat a very grain rich diet.

    H will eat almost everything.

  • we try to eat a veggie meal 2 to  times a week, for our health and for our wallets.  Otherwise H is a big meat person who grew up meat and potatoes.... and he grew up out west!

     I haven't tried freekeh yet, so I can't compare with quinoa... Perhaps a trip to the grocery store is in order for Monday!

  • We've kind of ventured away from eating as much meat as we used to as prices went up. We experiment with more vegetarian/bean dishes because it's less expensive to do.

    I hope I'm not butting in with the quinoa/couscous conversation but I just had to say that we tried couscous recently and LOVED it! I'm now trying to find a way to make more dishes with it lol. Quinoa is going to be next on my "to try" list

  • I love me some meat!!!! ;)

    We eat it maybe 3 times a week. Its mostly chicken, chicken and more chicken though. I am also trying to make more fish now. I love fish but dont like making it lol 

    Also i am alwayssssssss making veggies!

    Egg white for breakfast, lots of yogurt and salad and fruit for lunch =)

    H eats the same way except for dinner when he is at work

  • We are big meat people.  Growing up, a meal wasn't adequate for my dad unless there was meat and we had red meat a few times a week.  I'm the same way pretty much.  We'll usually be eating chicken, pork and beef.  I dislike most fish so H has it usually when we go out to eat.

  • Our meats consist of fish, chicken, tofu, beans, or turkey burgers. I don't eat red meat- ever. I stopped eating all meat in fourth grade, added in chicken in eighth grade and finally turkey somewhere in high school. I started eating fish in college. DH will order a burger or something when we go out to eat, but we never have it in the house.

    I need to get back to eating healthy. This past month has been a total wash out and I've been eating straight crap. We're going to the grocery store today to stock up on good foods.

  • we're meatitarians!  H & I are on the atkins diet, so our meals consist of a protein (usually chicken or fish) & veggies.  sometimes theres red meat, but not that often.  depending on which phase we're in determines how many carbs we can have-but those usually come from nuts or veggies.

  • i voted for we eat meat daily...which for us means we eat beef basically never, chicken 3 times a week, fish 3 times a week. turkey burgers generally 1-2x a week. H also eats shellfish but i don't. my mom occasionally cooks beef when i got there for dinner, so i eat it every few months.

    for lunch i generally eat a hummus sandwich, natural crunchy peanut butter sandwich, or a turkey sandwich. (yes, i bring my lunch because i am a cheapskate and picky eater.)

    H is a vegetarian. Not vegan- he eats eggs and dairy- but no fish or any other meat. 

    I would eat meat alllll the time but I'm not a very confident cook and veggies are much easier for me. We usually eat veggies, I'll do meat- mostly chicken- for myself one night a week, and I always get meat when we eat out. I love love love fish and shellfish but besides shrimp (easiest evarrr) I'm afraid to cook it. I have to make tofu stuff for him when I make meat for me, blech. I always use blocks of tofu, firm or extra firm. We use fake meat for tacos and he buys fake chicken nuggets/ breakfast sausage but I HAAAAATE that stuff.

    Nobs- tempeh = HURL!! I super hate the texture. I can do tofu. Rarely. I'll have a bite or 2. Especially in soups or stir fry. Never fried (OMG BARF when the outside's all firm/ fried and the inside's a soupy mess) 

    We both like cous cous, but again.... I'm a sucky cook. Eh, not sucky, just... I'm very uneasy in the kitchen, unless I'm baking. I really need to branch out and try other things.
