Fireworks?

Do you know what your city/state laws are regarding fireworks?  Are you allowed to set off whatever you want?

DH and I were totally caught by surprise this year.  Apparently, the city that we live in has NO laws regarding fireworks, so anyone can legally set off anything they'd like.  In Colorado, the rule is that the fireworks can't leave the ground.

Our neighbors down the street apparently do a huge display every year.  It's two families who together spend about $6000 on fireworks, and it's the huge, professional ones.  They've done this for 6 or 7 years now, so all the neighbors set up lawn chairs and watch...the BBQ starts around 6:00, and the fireworks start around 8:00 (long before dark).  It was crazy!  And what's more is that these weren't the only people doing it...from our house, we could see at least 5 places near us where they were setting off huge fireworks all night long.

Thank goodness, though, they only did it Sunday night!

Re: Fireworks?

  • In our city it is illegal but the cops don't do anything unless they have lots of complaints from people in one area.

  • in the city it is illegal but i live in the county and we do not have the same rules the city does. so every year you hear lots of fireworks going off. every year our city puts on a pretty good fireworks show. when i was little my parents use to have a vacation home in alabama on the river and every year the town did fireworks over the water on barges. that was some of the best firework shows i have ever scene.

  • It is illegal within our city limits, but no one does anything about it. Outside of the city limits it is legal and popular.

Regular people popping fireworks at home annoys me. I guess I'm a poor sport. But it sounds like your neighbors must know what they are doing, so I'm sure it would annoy me like my dumb almost 50-but acts like hes 16-neighbor.

  • Pennsylvania is so backwards with their fireworks laws.

There are fireworks stores and tents on every street corner in the summer, BUT you can't buy anything if you a a PA resident (you have to show your DL to purchase), AND you can't transport them back over state lines. SOOOO you have to be an out of state resident to buy and you can't take them back to NY or NJ and you can not set them off in PA? Does that make any sense? Yet, these stores make a mint in the summer.

Since we live on the boarder of PA and NJ, cops sit at all the bridges to cross over into NJ and watch to see who leaves the fireworks stores and go back into NJ and bust them for crossing state lines with explosives. Craziness.

Fireworks are illegal here, but people still drive to Indiana to buy them and bring them back and set them off LOL.  All the old ladies on our street were freaking out this weekend from the noise, thinking it was gunfire haha!!!
  • Fireworks are legal in GA. If I remember correctly, it's always been legal to shoot them off at your home, but it wasn't until about 6-8 years ago that you could purchase them in GA. Used to have to go to TN to buy them, but now they are sold pretty much everywhere in GA.

I could be a little off on the details though... I have no experience in purchasing or shooting fireworks.

Shoot them off illeaglly in PA or sneak them back over the boarder...you would think people are smuggling drugs the way the cops are steaked out at the boarders of NY and NJ. It's insane.

  • I'm not actually sure about where we live now but I didn't hear a thing. In my parents' town where I went to hs and college, it's illegal, apart from the community one they put on which we go to every year. Last year we were walking back from that and these kids were throwing fireworks into the street as people were walking by. They thought it was hilarious and their parents were outside and not doing anything about it. Really dangerous so I called the cops on them.
