I posted this on C&O too, but I know I saw some posts that were anti-dyson over on TK, so I thought you guys might have some recommendations.
Anyway, H and I are in the market for a new vacuum. The one I was looking at was a Hoover Turbo Cyclonic Upright, mostly because it's on sale at Target right now. Does anyone have that one, or have an opinion on it? Or the Hoover brand in general?
We're mainly looking for something a) reliable b) upright and c) $150 or less.

Re: Pimp your vacuum
I just bought this one from Target a couple weeks ago and so far I love it!

We always look up appliances before we buy on Consumer Reports. You need a subscription, but can search for anything online. Not sure how much it costs, but I would assume it's about the cost of a magazine subscription and totally worth it.
Our vacuum sucks (not in the good way!) so I'm no help with recommending anything specific!
I have this: http://www.target.com/Hoover-WindTunnel-Rewind-Upright/dp/B002HFDLCK/ref=br_1_12?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&qid=1278420638&searchView=grid5&sr=1-12&node=16387881&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&rh=&searchSize=30&id=Hoover%20WindTunnel%20Rewind%20Upright&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin
Hoover WindTunnel Rewind. The thing I like about it the best is that the cord retracts... you just push a button and it winds the cord up inside the vaccuum, so you don't have to mess with it at all. Other than that, I think it works well. It's my first vaccuum, though, so who knows, lol.
Finally...we are Mr. & Mrs.!!! WooHoo!!!

i absolutely love my Kenmore!! i have had it for 9 years and expect it to last me another 6. my parents and brother have similar models as well. they are not the smallest or the cheapest, but it can store in a few different ways to take up less room that you might think. i have serious allergies so it is very important to me to have all the different attachments for the rug, the couch, stairs, corners.
mine is similar to this model.

So, I know you want to spend less than 150 but here's my advice:
Buy a vacuum based off it's reputation and you'll only be buying one vacuum for the next 10 years. When you buy a cheaper vacuum, it doesn't last long. Most people are in the market for a new one within a couple of years. So you actually end up spending MORE over the years than if you had just gotten a really good one right off the bat.
My advice? Get an Oreck. Those suckers are meant to last up to 20 years. I knew nothing about them until I moved to MN. One of my friends here has worked at Oreck for over 6 years. She gets to try out EVERYTHING and she knows what works. She got a cheaper line vacuum from Oreck when she first started and it still works as well as it did back then, even cleaning up after 2 dogs.
Can you check to see if you have an Oreck store in your area?
It's almost here! Weeeeeeee!
