When you are paying with your check card and they ask Credit or Debit, which do you choose? Is there any reason for your choice?

Re: Credit or Debit
i choose 'credit' but when i think about it more its a lie. I choose 'credit' 90% of the time. When you use your check card as Credit (mine is a Visa Check Card), it comes with additional security just like when you use a normal credit card -- you're protected by fraudulent activity, etc. I feel safer using this option with all the identity theft issues than having to enter my PIN number.
But credit is costly to the store, so when i shop at a small local shop for instance, i choose debit
I never use a debit card--that card is only used as an ATM card for me. I'm paranoid!

I'm voting credit too. I only use my debit card at the ATM machine to get cash out. We use our credit card for anything we can 1) for the points, and 2) for the added security. I've had to file 2 fraudulent claims on my card before, and I would have lost a lot of money had it been on my ATM card.
I will add that we pay our bill monthly and monitor the CC level - so I can see where our CC strategy could go awry for some.

hmmmm. I always do debit if they ask.
I don't get rewards for my debit card (it's tied to my bank). However, no particular reason... hmmmm...
it's tied to my bank account so should i be saying credit???
clearly, i haven't thought this through.

I answered "switches because..."
If it is a large/expensive item, I use credit because I want the protection the credit card provides. If it is a mom and pop type place, I use debit because I know how much my sister and BIL pay each time someone uses a credit card at their store and I want to save those people the money. I also use debit at places like HEB and gas stations because otherwise it takes days of the actual amount to show up as "cleared" in our account, and DH has a tendancy to spend the money if he sees it in there before asking me. Debit clears that day.
