Sad about name change?

Does anyone feel sad about changing their name? I am going to change mine, but you know, it's been my name forever and it's such a huge part of me. I don't know, I think of my Dad and my Mom and how I'll never have the same last name anymore. :(

Okay, I'm done now.

Re: Sad about name change?

  • Nope! Not sad at all! I'm quite happy to be a K now. Getting to change my facebook, email, voice message, and introduce myself as "ME" is great!! I love it!
  • I have thought about that, too. I say I am not attached to it, but now the more I think about it, I guess I am. Although I will say it will be a welcome change bc my maiden name is so common, but definitely an adjustment.

  • Nope.  Not sad at all.  Of course, my father is giant asshat and didn't come to the wedding or even send an email saying congrats.  I want nothing that ties me to him.  Mom isn't sad either.  She got rid of that name years ago when she remarried.

But I can see why you are sad.  Maybe if I had a better father, I would be sad, too.

  • I am a little sad. My parents mentioned that too, how they were losing another W (there aren't a lot of family in my direct line who can carry on the name). At the same time though, both my brother and cousin had sons so they were just being a bit dramatic lol. I am glad to change my name and I look forward to when it's official but there's a part of me that sniffles at the fact :)

Funny story about that too- the day after the wedding we all went to breakfast and my sister turned to me and my sister-in-law (brother's wife) and said I wasn't her real sister anymore because of my new name and that my SIL was her real one! Weird how that works lol

  • I just moved my maiden name to my middle name spot, but it's strange that my parents now address packages to Mrs. B. lol

I'm a little sad about it, but I'm more excited about being Mrs. B instead.

  • I am definitely excited, and I did update my FB with my married name, but I still kept my maiden name. I asked HB if I could change it to McThXXX but I don't think he will allow that; just kiddin.

  • I was kinda sad about it.  Plus my new name is like twice as long, so I had a hard time adjusting to writing it.

  • Actually, I'm sad I don't get to change my last name. I married someone with the same last name (not a cousin lol). Everyone keeps asking me what's my new last name and I tell them it hasn't changed, I still me. I didn't feel married for a few days due to no changes for me.

    Birthday
  • I'm actually really excited!  I don't have any strong ties to my current last name.  There are a ton of men in my family so it's not like it's going to die out.  I'm just cheesey and like the idea of being Mrs.Andy

  • I feel slightly the same as it has been such a big part of me.

JB, I am on the fence about making my old last my new middle, was there extra paperwork for that or same?

    TTD imageMy Bio
  • lol I have done zero of the paperwork... I have to take a day off from work to get all that crap done... I'm assuming it's not that much more, since you change your name officially with the government at the SS office... You could always make it a second last name since it's legally permissible in MA to have two last names.
  • Thanks! I guess I need to officially decide by tomorrow AM!!!  I am going to try and go to the SS office tomorrow or Wed at the latest. I keep going back and forth with moving my last to my middle....

this is true in MI too.

i'm fairly certain it's true for the vast majority of states, regardless of whether or not they tell you it is (i know a lot of people who have been lied to because the clerk they got that day didn't like it).

Oh man. I thought Mass. was special. lol

  • I was so excited about changing my name.  I was thinking about making Taylor my middle name, but decided against it.  (Oh heaven forbid I mentioned my last name.....except it's not my last name anymore so no need to freak out.....)  I was in the SS office and was completely overwhelmed by the process and figured my middle name was cute so I might as well keep it.

  • I really really want(ed) my last name to match my H. I like waking up and him saying "good morning mrs. ****." He gets alll giddy and it's hilarious.

The only time I felt a little sad was tagging the photos of my dad walking me down the aisle and us having two different last names haha. He doesn't care though.

JB, I am on the fence about making my old last my new middle, was there extra paperwork for that or same?

When I was at the SS office, I just had to fill out a piece of paper that asked for New name to appear on card, so I think you could just fill in First Name Maiden New Last with no trouble.

As for changing mine, I've had a couple little pings of sadness, but mostly I've been excited. I haven't made the switchover yet at work, which I think will be really weird, since that's when I introduce myself the most.

  • I'm a little sad about it, especially when my parents kept saying, "this is the last time I'll see Miss Bxxxxxx!" and how I won't be a Bxxxxxx anymore. But I'm excited to become a unit with my husband now (and inside, I'll have be Miss Bxxxxxx) :)

  • I haven't changed my name at work yet.  I needed my new SS card to do it, which just came in the mail.  and I was waiting for my nursing license  paperwork to come because the name on my license has to match my name at work because of computer charting.  So once I get that all changed, hopefully I'll be good.  That & if Chase finally spells my name right on the new credit cards.  It's only taken 2 tries :)

    People do that???  Wow.

I have a small twang because I am the last one on our side with my last name.  My grandpa has a brother with sons, so it's not dead... just not in our direct line any more.  Other than that I am READY to change.  My name was pronounced or spelled correctly, uh, never.

um, yes. stewards for the government can lie and get away with it because that's how society feels about people who don't change their names. it happens all of the time.

Sad.  And people trust them, so they never do their own research.  I'll research, but mostly because I assume stupidity, not maliciousness.

  • Tiffie--that is hysterical!  that happened to someone else i know, too.

not changing mine precisely because it would be too painful!!

  • Definitely sad about it! Their aren't many people in my family to carry on my maiden name which bums me out. Also pretty much everyone has a nickname for me that involves my old last name in one way or another so that all has to change. My new last name is way longer and way more difficulut to spell/say as well. Lastly, it's just a freaking pain in the butt to do it. With all that being said though, I never second guessed changing my name and I am thrilled to share the same last name as hubster now :-)

Yeah, I'm kind of sad about it, there's only one boy in the whole huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge family, and he lives all the way across the country from the rest of us, so he doesn't know us at all.  H's name isn't any better than my maiden name with being misspelled, so boo that.
