The Last Child - book club

So, I started and finished the book up at the cottage a few nights ago, and couldn't put it down! I really, really enjoyed the ending - even if it did feel a little rushed (and a bit Deus Ex Machina). I was really hesitant to pick it up because so many people were saying how depressing it is... and even though it was a less than happy book, I think it ended on the right note.

Anyone else finished it? Almost finished?

Re: The Last Child - book club

  • I was just coming to post about this.  I picked the book up at the library on Friday, started it Sunday... and finished it Sunday!  I was up until 3am  because I just couldn't put it down.

I won't go into details before the wrap-up post, but obviously I enjoyed the book!  I like the way the author writes, and the characters and story were compelling.  I didn't find it depressing, I actually thought the ending was kind of hopeful.  I also liked the way the themes of strength and power, different types of power and different ways for people to feel strong/powerful/empowered recurred throughout the novel.

  • I finished this weekend as well.  I was having a hard time putting it down... with all the story's twists and turns I just had to know what was going to happen next.  Like the PP stated, it was a little depressing and sad but still a good story.

For those that haven't finished, or even those that have, did anyone else wonder how Levi Freemantle's character was going to tie into the story?  I kept thinking it felt he was just thrown in there and waited for a connection to be explained (the connection or tie in was eventually made, for those of you who haven't finished it yet).

Now I'm going to focus on my work and school related reading while I wait for next month's book.  Smile

  • I had so little time to read last week that I'm a bit behind.  I am interested now though, so I'll probably really get into it this week.
  • glad i'm not the only one that stayed up WAY too late to finish this book in almost one sitting.  Also I thought the ending was a little rushed too.

In my previous post the entire time I wasn't depressed for the characters per se, but just kept feeling bad for everyone and really did not get the feeling that things would ever be "back to normal" for them - but did have hope that they could pull it together a little.

  • I am about 60% through at this point.  It was a little depressing at the very beginning, but I have quickly found it to be more hopeful, somehow.  I'm really enjoying it, and can't wait to finish it (I probably would have yesterday, but we had a sudden change of plans yesterday and today).

I have been wondering about him.  I wonder what his story is.

I have to say, though, I think my favorite character is that of Jack.  He's so vulnerable and somehow....innocent?  He's not a perfect kid, but he wants to be better, he just doesn't know how.  I desperately want to him somehow solve this case, or do something else big, so he can feel like a success.

  • Woohoo! I'll add you to the list. Smile It's pretty simple - we take 4 weeks to read each book, and take turns picking a book to read (we just go in alphabetical order - right now we're in the S's). It's really cool to read everyone's choices!
  • I have been on page 100 for a week. Why you ask? I finoished the last book in the first few days and didn't participate much in the weekly discussions because I didn't want to blow the ending for those still reading. By the time the final discussion came (3.4 weeks after I finished) I had moved on - my brain doesnt hold much for long :/ . I will start reading it again next week and will be ready for the final discussion.
  • I'm almost done w/the book!

I read a lot sitting poolside while celebrating my hubby's surprise birthday in Vegas :D

Can't wait to get to the end and find out how everything ties together!
