Here's the situation. I currently work for a local company, from home, part-time. My hours were just cut from 20 to 10. DS goes to daycare 3 days per week, and we haven't changed that since my hours were reduced... so technically, I have more than one full day of being a stay-at-home-mom, minus the kid. ![]()
One of the on-site employees was just let go b/c of poor performance. In a group meeting earlier this week, they mentioned wanting to replace her. BUT there is so little work to go around, everyone there has no idea what the new person would do...
So my idea was that I'd ask them two things: 1) are part-timers with very little hours eligible for pay raises (I've been at the same rate since Feb 09) and 2) would they consider bringing me on in-office for the three days that DS is at daycare, perhaps even in conjunction with a small raise?
This would mean a lot less flexibility regarding H's travel (DS and I like to go along when possible), which is making me hesitate. Also, I kind of really love being on my own for work, setting my own schedule and stuff, but we could use the extra money and I've been really REALLY bored having so few hours. I mean, a person can only do so many loads of laundry during the day...
WDYT?
Re: Is this a dumb idea?
I agree. I don't think asking for a raise w/o taking on any additional work or hours would go over as well as the above scenario.
agreed.
Definitely not a dumb idea if you want more hours. I'm sure the company would be thrilled if a current employee would step up & fill their need in the office.
And that cake in your siggy looks delish!
Fruit pizza! Thanks.

you can come do my laundry :-D
I'd go ahead and ask. Nothing to lose, ya know?
LOL!
I'll draft an email and have my sister, who works on-site already, look it over.

Because you travel so much, I would really think long and hard about it. Once you are in the office on a regular basis, I think you that flexibilty and even if the bosses say you can have it, do you think CW may be resentful about it. Right now, out of sight, out of mind??
Can you pick up any other side work?
I LOVE that out-of-sight, out-of-mind aspect right now. But I'm kind of bored. And we don't always get to travel with DH. This week he's in Cincinnati and we're home, and next wk he's in ATL without us. Hm.

Sounds like he travels a lot; how often would you see him if you stopped traveling with him? Would that extra time apart be a strain on the family?

It goes in waves. April was 3 weeks, May was 0, June was 2 weeks, July is 3 weeks, and August is open so far. We didn't start going with him until DS was a few months old, and yeah... it sucked being on my own. That was before daycare and before I worked PT at all, though.
So much to consider, and I have to do it soon before they hire another useless candidate like the past three have been--my sister (inside source) says to get a letter in by week's end...

Maybe you can suggest doing your plan on a trial basis- like 3 months and then re-evaluating? Then you both have an "out" if you don't like it.
