Turned off by Obama call last night

Some woman called me last night supposedly from the Obama campaign and asked since now that we are in the final stretch would I consider donating again.  I said sure and that I would go online to do so.  She said, "Well tonight we aren't doing that and we are hoping for donations over the phone."  I asked her what she meant, and how was she planning on getting the donation?  She said "Well you could give your credit card info over the phone or we can send you a donor card."

Huh?

Yeah lady if you think I am going to give some random person calling my house my credit card number over the phone you have been smoking some crack.  Further, if I say that I will make a donation online, say thanks and move on.  A donor pledge card process is not going to be any faster than me going online.  So either this person was a fraud or the campaign has a couple of idiots working for them.  Needless to say, I did not go online and donate again.

I may next week, but not right now.  Smile

Re: Turned off by Obama call last night

  • definitely sounds like a scam.
  • I'm with Zoe...

I'd contact the campaign and let them know. It sounds like a scam, and the campaign should know about it, because it may well be that the security of their databases has been breached.

    I am the 99%.
  • That sounds like a scam.

However, there is a good possibility that she took "I'll go online and donate" to mean, "I want to get off the phone so I'll tell her whatever I think she wants to hear even though I have no plans to donate". ?Our local FOP used to do this to us all of the time. ?They would not take no for an answer, nor would they take, "I'll make a donation online" for an answer. ?I used to screen their calls. ?It was bad.

  • Definitely could be a scam. You're smart not to do anything over the phone.
  • ditto on this being a scam. not only would i call the campaign and let them know, i'd call the state board of elections or even the attny general's office to complain. then again, i've been trying to get thru to the board of elections all damn morning and they must be so inundated with calls about voter registration (why i'm calling) that no one picks up the phone. so go figure. this election is gonna be pure madness, i swear.
  • I agree it sounds like a scam and I'd report it to the OBC.
  • Yeah, definitely sounds like a scam.  Never give credit card information, ssn, etc. over the phone unless you placed the call and are certain the number you are calling is legit (like a catalogue or something).
  • I don't think it's a scam. I get calls like this all the time. I never contribute over the phone, but I do often get legit pledge cards in the mail after the call. Usually they want you to commit to a certain $ figure on the spot because they want to say "we raised $X today!" or they want to meet some pre-set fundraising goal.
