Question of morality

Let's say you've won a contest, and there is a $100 gift card prize. You've already received the gift card and happily spent it. However, the people running the contest must have forgotten that they gave it to you, so they sent you another one. Do you keep it and spend it? Or let them know and give it back?[Poll]

  • Special snowflake?  Am I missing something?

It's the answer you choose when the others aren't good enough for ya.

  • Special Snowflake:  Call and let them know they sent you an extra card, then cross fingers, toes, and eyes they let you keep it.

    ditto!

  • I'd take the money and run.  I know. There's a special place in hell with my name on it.

    But here's how I figure:

    1) It's their mistake.

    2) It's a small mistake, in terms of company finances.  $100 is not a lot of money in the sweepstakes world.  If it was more than that, I would hesitate.  But they're not going to get all legal and sue you over $100.  Just talking to a lawyer about a law suit would cost them over $100.

    This!

It's just like if someone gave you too much change back. Wouldn't you let them know?

Haha. Depends on how much change. Does this make me a bad person?

  • Oh you just take that card and spend the money!  It's their fault they did not keep track of who they sent them to.  Then come hang out with Karen and I in the VIP section.....in hell...... Devil

haha. I've always wondered what it was like behind those velvet ropes...

  • I'd call them and tell them.  They may say keep it or they may not but I wouldn't be able to handle the internal conflict if I didn't speak up.  Heck, I went back to the store last week because they only charged me for 1 bunch of mint when I had 2.  It was like a buck fifty!

LoL, I'm going to start calling you St. Witty. Angel

  • So what's the story?  Did you get two $100 cards?

Me three... I really wanted to vote that I'd send it back, but I probably wouldn't... Embarrassed

  • I'd send it back, because if I kept the 100 bucks, I know for a fact something would happen, like my car break down, etc. and it would prob cost 200 bucks. Jesus teaching me a lesson. lol

Yeah. We had won a card while we were at one of my husband's work related functions... it was a door prize. Provided by one of the companies in his industry, but not one he works with personally. And we picked the gift card up at the front desk. But today, DH got another one in the mail. He called me asking what to do... and all I can think of is all the wonderful things I could get with it. Because I am a bad person.

  • We got an extra $100 back with our security deposit with the last place we rented. We paid a $100 pet deposit that was non-refundable....but we got it back. I waited a few days to see if they would call me but they never did. I cashed it and thought maybe they were being nice because of all the problems we had with the place! Wink

  • I voted give it back because like Foto said I am jinxed and I something would happed to me for spending it.

Although I think if I had read the entire post before answering the question I would have said special snowflake lol. I would call and let them know and see what happens.

oooooooooo.... because it's work involved .... I would definitely give it back.  Word could get back to his employer.

LOL.. so... the moral of the story is that it's okay if it ends up sending you to hell... but not okay if you lose your job.

Actually. Hubs is self-employed. It was just from a networking group thing with other people in his line of work - does that make any sense? No threat of job loss or getting in trouble by his boss. We've decided to hold onto it for a couple of weeks and see if they notice. No need to make the decision NOW.... :)

  • This actually  makes me even more firm on the side of call them and tell them.  Can you imagine the damage that could be done if word got out in a networking group that you got rewarded twice and didn't do anything about it?  That seems like it could be hugely detrimental to future business for your DH and a huge zinger to his professional character if someone found out.

I gotta agree.  If he keeps it, the best case scenario is that it goes unnoticed.  The worst case scenario is that it's noticed and your husband gets a bad rep.  If you give it back, the best case scenario is that your husband gets a gleaming reputation.  The worst case scenario?  Things remain as they are.

... sadly, I think you're right, Karen. Although I don't think it would be "hugely detrimental" as witty said (I don't think I described the group well enough... since it's not a referral based networking group... you probably can't even call it a networking group. Bah. It's hard to explain. DH doesn't get business from this... maybe a better description is it's a social group with people in the same field?), it's probably better to err on the side of caution.
